Re: Food Worth Flying For: Best Apple Cake in All of Amsterdam

I love Dutch Apple-tart and have tried many different cafes all over Amsterdam. Whilst Winkel 43's is amongst the very best, the ultimate, in my opinion, is the apple-tart served ay Cafe Villa Zeezicht on Singel canal. Lovely chunks of apple in a crunchy pastry and that cakey topping with loads of c...

Re: we've been banned....official.

Talk of the Dutch economy collapsing is utter nonsense. As is usual, people make reactionary along the lines of "Amsterdam will go bust without us smokers!!" because they are upset about the impending coffeeshop situation and need to let off a bit of steam. Tourist smokers spend a signific...

Re: Homemade pies Pipj area

Yeah, can't recommend Wild Moa Pies highly enough. A fantastic quick lunch stop whilst exploring De Pijp. A well filled meat pie, brown sauce (bottle provided free on the table) and a bottle of ginger beer. Lovely.

Re: Cinema in Amsterdam?

Japanese owners at Betty Too are very nice. Pretty good menu as well, small but White Chocco is a highlight. If you're just having a quick smoke then De Dampkring isn't too far away. It get's very crowded in the evenings, as you probably already know, but it's basically just the other end of the flo...

Re: Cinema in Amsterdam?

I'd go to Betty Too on Reguliersdwarsstraat. Just a short walk from Pathe de Munt. Nice coffeeshop.

Bushdocter Amstel isn't far either. Just along from where Rokerij III was.

Re: Pinball

They use to have a pinball table in the basement level of Kadinsky on Rosmarijnsteeg. https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/Kadinsky.html But I haven't been in there for a couple of years now so don't know if they still have one. Perhaps, somebody who has been in there recently could confirm if they stil...

Re: Homemade pies Pipj area

I had a pie at Wild Moa Pies during my Amsterdam trip last December. Absolutely delicious! It's owned by a Dutchwoman who lived in New Zealand for many years, trained as a chef there and fell in love with meat pies. When she returned to The Netherlands she set up a catering company, supplying pies f...

Re: Cinema in Amsterdam?

I think DC is referring to the reputation that Amsterdam's cinemas have for having a bit of a mouse and rat problem. It's not just the cinemas though, i guess any city with so many old buildings is going to have a lot of rodents.

Re: Coffeeshops in Britain could look like this!

There were also a couple of 'coffeeshops' in London in the mid noughties. It was when cannabis was downgraded and the Police turned a blind eye, to a certain extent. One was a north African/Turkish cafe in Bethnal Green were you could buy small amounts of hash and grass and smoke it on the premises....

Re: Coffeeshops in Britain could look like this!

There have been a couple of attempts to open coffeeshops in the UK. They were shutdown immediately by the Police. There was quite a good documentary on C4 about it a few years ago.
I think one of the coffeeshops was in Stockport and was called The Dutch Experience.

Re: Strangest sights you've seen in Amsterdam or the NL

LOL! Funny. I tell you, that morning is one I will never forget! I am going to have to check that movie out. Yeah, definitely check out Silent Witness. It's a so-bad-its-good thriller starring William Hurt, Jennifer Tilly and Dennis Leary with great Amsterdam scenery and a fantastically stupid car ...

Re: Cinema in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is one of the best cities in Europe for film fans. Though there are arthouse cinemas all over the city, mainstream film fans aren't quite as well catered for. The Pathé Tuschinski (Reguliersbreestraat 26-34) is the most famous cinema in The Netherlands and really is worth visiting, even if...

Re: Strangest sights you've seen in Amsterdam or the NL

My wife and I went to the Dam for New Years 2010. So I guess it was Jan 2nd 2010. My wife and I decide to get up early and beat the crowd to the Rijksmuseum. So we are walking, it is early, cold, and still dark. I am stoned/she is not (doesn't smoke). This guy comes past us on roller blades wearing...

Re: what coffee shops are open to tourists?

:) No worries mate. I've seen quite a few people ask the same question online. You can visit coffeeshops in Amsterdam to your heart's content... 'til the end of the year at least.
First trip to Amsterdam is always the best one.

Re: what coffee shops are open to tourists?

You seem to have got The Netherlands (the country) and Amsterdam (capital city of The Netherlands) confused. The tourist coffeeshop ban is in effect in Southern provinces of The Netherlands. Not the southern part of Amsterdam city. This will change in January 2013 when the ban will affect the whole ...
