Day 1

As I get married in a couple of months I thought it'd be an excellent excuse to go to my favourite city with a few of my favourite people. There will be eight of us all told, seven from day one, me, my best man R, KC, T, M, C and the Dwarf, the Geordie arrives the day after and completes our little gang. I'd been twice with R in the past (see "Assorted Memories" report), KC had lived there for 8 months but doesn't smoke, T, M and the Dwarf all like a smoke. T's been a few times before. C does smoke but he won't mind me calling him a lightweight, my toilet bowl would back me up if it could speak! A varied set of tolerances 😃

The day arrives and T is at mine around 8ish. He has a couple rolled, one for now, one for the airport. Nice one. We swing by and pick the Dwarf up, he's running late and appears suitably bleary eyed. All set, off to the airport.

Most of us are flying together, which is an achievement in itself as M lives in another country. We meet up with R, KC and M at the bar and the obligatory pint is consumed. The Dwarf has a Bloody Mary, yuk. C is on an earlier flight so we meet him at Schipol after a slight delay. We grab our tickets and there's a train waiting, it's the express. Nice.

Upon arriving at Centraal the general consensus is to pick up a smoke and take the tram down to Vondelpark to check in, dump bags etc. With Voyagers not being what it was it makes sense to head gently towards N Voorburgwal for a tram. 420 Cafe is selected. I've never been before, I don't much like this part of town around Neiwendijk and Damrak, it's too busy and more shopping based. Subsequently I've never frequented the coffeeshops around here.

There's works going on around the station and it's even more hectic than usual, geezers in hi vis directing pedestrians across the road, it's almost a relief to hit Damrak.

We arrive at de Kuil still with our bags and the place is packed. It's very brown and old school which I like but way too busy. We're not stopping for drinks and get served fairly quickly. I wanted some Nevilles Haze but the tub was just shake, the 420 Haze was only popcorn so I went for the Diesel. €14 a gram and it was a very mild effect with not much taste, disappointing first bud. T got the 420 Haze and was non plussed too. For some reason I thought the bar next door, the Bottle is it? was smoker friendly but there was signs up saying no weed even outside so we moved on.

As its only round the corner we stopped at Cafe Belgique for a quick drink and a smoke then jumped on a tram. We stayed at the Van Gogh hostel just a stride from Museumplein. Decent location, modern, clean, cheap! Quick bag dump and we're off...

Easy Times is our next stop. Lots of purchases all round here. Myself and the Dwarf got a gram of Gorilla Cookies at €16, really frosty buds - that's what got me, nice sedative stone, we both enjoyed this. The Dwarf also got some Moonshine Haze, which he said was too strong for him and OG Kush hash, whilst others bought Biscotti and Purple Punch. I needed a grinder so picked one up here, it was about €5 for a basic plastic job. Could've got one cheaper but never mind, it was needed. We grabbed drinks and sat next to the front door, had a half hour settling in and making a kind of plan.

Image13 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

We walked up Leidsestraat to Spui and the Dampkring. Small queue in front of us but we were handed menus to prepare ourselves. I was on a hash hunt here, the dark haired lady tender served me and couldn't have been more helpful. She showed me a variety of Moroccan hash but the Niqa and Sensibile just sung when I put my nose to the tub. I was looking for a more blonde crumbly type of hash but hell, when you get shown that you just have to go for it. Now I am no hash expert by any stretch, I just have no source for it, so I really enjoyed smoking both of these.

The Sensabile is a very sticky dark hash that reminds me more of the Indian hashes I used to get from bluebird in consistency, it came wrapped in parchment paper which helped. Amazing sweet floral smell. Turned to almost liquid in the pipe and bong, I put most of it in joints with pure weed, seemed to last for ages too. The Niqa was similarly fragrant, extremely strong aroma in the tub. Not as sticky as the Sensibile but still very pliable and easy to manipulate without having it stuck to your fingers. T bought a g of Tha Melon, more on that later...

Sensibile

We didn't hang around. Susies Saloon was chosen as a base for the evening. The smoking room is still in effect, tobacco users may note that it is still permitted here, for the time being at least.

Whilst here the top table became free which was perfect for a group our size. A picture of contented industry we get to work on joints, pipes and bongs. Obviously after an hour or two I'm running low on flower, a quick trip to Bagheera is in order. C, the Dwarf and R were going to come with but as we get to the door, swerving the girl who has just hit the deck in front of us, the heavens open. Total downpour. It eases a little after a minute or two and myself and C head out.

I've not been here since about 97 and obviously things have changed. I take a gram of Notorious OG and two of Lemon Bubble, also a gram of Sour Walker for the Dwarf. C also bags some Lemon Bubble. Back to Suzies. I'm the one in cap and specs, T is the geezer with the porn tache, everyone else was so stoned their faces went all blurry.

Another little session ensues before we wander up Damstraat, grab some crap takeaways and head to Belgique again.

KC is here, he's been flitting between bars all night as a non smoker he couldn't handle the smokey den of the Saloon. I like Belgique a lot and it's become a regular haunt over recent visits, quirky decor, DJ, nice vibe, staff and beer. The heated terrace tops it off, perfect for people watching while you smoke. There's always interesting scribblings on the opposite wall, and I take a couple of snaps of nearby art, I barely took any photos this trip - too stoned, new phone and I didn't bring my dslr.

As the night draws to a close the DJ ends his set to a round of applause and we head out. Deciding to head back to the hostel we wander through the 9 streets. KC is hilariously shit faced and has something of a wobble on. He's got his headphones on and is air drumming and blurting out random lyrics when all of a sudden... Scoop! Two Dutch girls appear from nowhere either side of him and link him on each arm. "Hey, how's it going? You Ok? Walk with us" These girls and their mates are so infectious and upbeat, we're all falling about laughing, KCs eyes bulging with the shock, they almost picked him up clean off his feet. Just one of those many magical, had to be there Amsterdam moments. Anyway we walked with them and talked football for a while til we hit Prinzengracht, left turn to Leidsestraat and more takeaway shite.

The dwarf gets churros with strawberries, whipped cream and chocolate sauce, €16! How we pointed and laughed at him, and then helped ourselves when he couldn't finish them. For my part, I fared no better. It had to be done. It was my ninth visit and I'd never had a Febo. After perusing the heated cabinets and surveying the many, high quality looking culinary delights, I opted for a kipburger. This wonderfully grim morsel came bathed, resplendent, in a kind of nuclear looking goo. Disgusting, but it's ticked off the fuck it list so well, fuck it!

Image4 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image9 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

We return to base, some hit the hay. Myself, the Dwarf and I think R head outside for a bedtime smoke on a little bench under a tree.I've got a lovely heavy feeling when I turn in, looking forward to a nice kip and our first full day tomorrow... If only C would stop snoring.

1g Gorilla Cookies - €16 - Easy Times

Day 2

I wake early at around half past five. My earplugs have fallen out and there is a discordant melody of snoring in the room, I struggle to doze. At 7am the alarm on my phone goes off, I'd forgotten to cancel it from the day before. KC jumps out of bed like a man possessed. "Mum, Mum!" he screams, spinning round, disorientated, opening the bathroom door and bathing the room in brilliant, unwelcome light. Of course this outburst has everyone awake and laughing, most go back to sleep, I can't so I get up, shower and head out for breakfast.

Across Museumplein, through the Rijks tunnel, round the corner to Rookies. I love coming here for a wake and bake in the window seat. I pick up a gram of Amnesia and chat a little to the dealer about the refurb and how long it is since my last visit, grab a coffee and my favourite seat and a smoke. I'm still using a little tobacco in my joints at the moment, I pretty much sack it off for the rest of the trip at some point today, so I roll one and sit outside. There's never more than a couple of people here at this time in the morning and never anyone sat outside, I love sitting here and watching the working day begin as I get high. The guy from the hipster shop across the way that seems to sell booze and haircuts says good morning, delivery men smile. All is well with the world. So the Amnesia was pretty average but it's breakfast, it'll do.

Image27 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

After a while I head back to the hostel where the rest of the crew are waking. T and the Dwarf are going for full English on Leidseplein and then hooking up with the Geordie who arrives this morning. KC is having a lie in and M has some work to do before he hooks up with us later. Me, R and C head over to Katsu.

I pretty much know where I'm going but decide to consult google maps for the first time on this trip, after being led a merry dance for ten minutes I decide to go full Skywalker and turn off my targeting computer and use the force. Works a treat and we're at Katsu in no time.

Image17 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image20 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

It's a nice mid-morning atmosphere in Katsu. There's a few people in but it's not busy, if anyone has watched Big D's YouTube videos from a few years back, well the guy he goes around with, the tour guide, he was in there. It bugged me for about ten minutes where I recognised him from. I picked up some Black Widow Haze and we sat in the back seat where the Windows looks out onto the little garden thing. There was a cool dog roaming around, very friendly. A couple more people come in, including a rather lively lady who kept laughing at nothing and tossing her lighter in the air. The weed was OK, nothing special. We head back after a while and pick up C's phone which had failed to charge overnight.

The three of us head out past Leidseplein up to Prinzengract with a happy amble on. R asks if there's any coffeeshops nearby and it turns out we're only a couple of blocks from La Tertulia, I was hankering after a visit last time but didn't make it, now seems as good a time as any.

La Tertulia is a split level shop with a small counter area downstairs and seating on a mezzanine type upstairs area, it's bright and airy and was empty when we arrived. There wasn't much on the menu that took my fancy but they did have a strain called The Hulk, I enquired whether this was related to Bruce Banner and the nice, younger of the two ladies said that it was. I gave it a go for later.

Image18 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image21 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

We decamped upstairs and wanting to respect the tobacco rules I knocked a pure of the remaining Amnesia and Black Widow together. This was probably a sliding doors moment for me on this trip, I barely touched tobacco for the rest of the time which in retrospect was a fucking inspired decision! This is a very chill coffeeshop with no pretensions seemingly untouched by the corporate, brandification of the cs scene. I like it. It very much reminds me of coffeeshops of old, the mezzanine reminds me a little of the old Sensi Seeds cs. If the seats were a little more comfy, and the "art" a little less amateur (my degree is in art history, sorry I'm a snob), I could imagine whiling away a morning with a book or a crossword. Lovely. Opening hours are a little wonky, so best checking before trekking. CS Johnny is just round the corner, but I forgot because....

We start getting contact from T and the Dwarf who have met up with the Geordie, we let them know where we are and they start heading over. In the meantime we get itchy feet and head out, we call T and they are currently holed up in Tweede Kamer, we're not far away so we mooch over.

We walk into Tweede and the lads have the table to the right, the Geordie has his back to the door so I lean over and ask, "Anyone sat here?" Wahey! Greetings etc Sesh on! R got some Kosher Tangie which, like always, he vaped through his Pax, he rated it as the best of his trip. We used to spend a lot of time here when we'd been together in the past and he was clearly pleased to be back.

Image14 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image15 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

The Hulk wasn't really doing it for me so I grabbed a gram of Amnesia G13 for some sativa zinginess, very frosty decent sized nugs, solid smoke. The lady tender gave T and I posters which was a nice touch. However, when I was doing my shopping I asked about the genetics of a couple of strains that were prefixed "Blue", I wanted to know where that came from ie Blue Dream, Blueberry. I'd be more interested in a Blue Dream cross you see, but she didn't know. I'd expect the tender to know that information but at least she was honest and didn't try to blag it. It's a minor thing really, they made us very welcome and a good time was had by all. I think KC and M hooked up with us here. All together again briefly a plan was made, the non smokers or non needers went to Suzies while the rest of us took a walk to Solo.

On the way, on N Voorburgwal near The Plug, we see a small group of young girls, 18-21ish. One of them is sat down on some steps, very pale, pool of sick at her feet. Looks like she's whitey'd. I realised I still had a biscuit from my morning coffee at Rookies so go over and offer my confectionery in order to give her a sugar boost. They all looked pretty freaked, paranoid, but they took the biscuit and regardless I'm sure she was OK.

Image16 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Solo.A new one on me but my mouth has been watering at the hashes they've been posting on Instagram. I had a look at a few and then plumped for the Glueberry OG and the Fruity Pebbles. Both blonde creamy Moroccan hashes with strong floral aromas, the Glueberry was stonier, both very tasty. The hashes I've bought so far I've been very impressed with, thanks to Marok and Copenhagen Couple amongst others for making it a damn sight easier with all their reviews and knowledgeable posts. I always kick myself for not buying more hash, well I got 6 this time and can see myself buying more next time, I felt I gave it a better go than I normally do mainly because I felt better equipped to know what to look for.

Image23 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image22 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Glueberry and Fruity Pebbles hash, sorry - can't remember which was which.

Anyway, nowhere to sit in Solo so we head over to Suzies and meet the others, it's happy hour and we settle in nicely. Everybody is happy here and over the course of the evening I lead small excursions to Bagheera where I buy Lots Of Zkittlez and Serious Kush for €12. Then later to Het Ballonetje where I procure Mango Sapphire and a gram and half of G13 Mr Nice. Later still I head out on my own to Het Gelderse where I pick up Triangle Kush for €13 and for old times sake Bubblegum at €8. Suitably stocked up I meet with the rest in Suzies and proceed to get very high smoking pure weed joints with various hashes sprinkled on top.

Image24 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

As for the purchases the Zkittles was good, nice taste. G13MN very frosty, Mango a little disappointing. Bubblegum was nice and frosty too and made good filler, can't remember too much about the kushes but I know I was very stoned!

We somehow ended up back at the hostel but I can't really remember. I know we bumped into some young very well dressed Germans on the way, they thought T was homeless and kept shouting "Oi, Oi", this then became an oft-repeated phrase for the rest of the trip. Back at base apparently I went to the Dwarfs room, rolled a joint and then melted. It's been a successful day!

Day 2 Smoke List

1g Amnesia - €10ish - Rookies
1g Black Widow Haze - Katsu
1g The Hulk - €14ish - La Tertulia
1g Amnesia G13 - €13 - 2e Kamer

1g Lots Of Zkittlez - Bagheera
1g Serious Kush - €12 - Bagheera

Thanks for the kind comments.

Day 3

I'm up around 8ish and as usual breakfast in Rookies this time with C. I roll a joint, reach into my jacket pocket for a light and pull out the joint I'd rolled before hitting the hay last night. I'd forgotten all about that! Awesome. We head back and the others are planning food and other such trivialities. The dwarf and C were off to the Stejdlijk. My thoughts are on stocking up. C is up for the walk so we head out to De Kade and DNA.

Once again I waste a couple minutes with Google Maps before I regain faith in my own memory and we're off. I've only been to these shops once before but the journey seemed like I'd made it a hundred times and we were there in no time.

Image34 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

De Kade has had a refit since I was last there and very nice it looks too. Unfortunately the screen was down when we arrived but the tubs were clearly labelled. I felt sorry for the staff, one sorting weed, one trying to sort the screen and one trying to bring up the menu on her phone. Add to that some guy there to fix the lighting or something, hectic. Not really, it's super chill at De Kade. Staff were great, I got a gram each of Rollex, Johnny Blaze and Nicole Kush Hash, free pack of skins and a pack of De Kade branded tips, nice touch, thanks guys. C also fancies a buy and asks my advice, knowing him I recommend either G13 or Super Silver, he has a look at both under the magnifying light and opts for the SSH, a bargain at €9 and he later remarked it's clear head high was exactly what he needed. I'm a big fan of this shop, an oasis of calm in a quiet neighbourhood away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, C really liked it too and rated it his best cs of the trip for ambience.

We sat in the back and rolled a joint each before moving on to DNA. Just quick buy and fly, I had a pocket full of indica from De Kade so I picked up a gram of Amazing Haze for €11 I think. Usual efficient service, no chat. Onwards. It's cool to spend a bit of one on one time with C, we geek out spotting and discussing interesting elements of architecture, there's some cool Art Nouveau features around here, like much of the city, if you like that kind of thing.

Image38 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image33 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Back at the hostel I roll a doob of the Amazing Haze mixed with a little hash and set off, through Vondelpark and on to Boerejongens West. On the way, somewhere around Tweede Kostverlorenkade my eye is drawn to the side of a building, all black and white, almost Tudor-esque, but painted and more angular. Upon closer inspection a stone plaque reveals the building as a Co-Op and makes reference to the town of Rochdale. This small northern English town was the birthplace of the coop movement and is just a couple of miles from where I live. How strange that this small reminder of home had caught my eye!

At Boerejongens I pick up a gram of SSH Block and head over to Soundgarden where we meet up with KC and M. On the way we pass Massawa and Cheech And Chongs so I grab a couple of snaps.

Image35 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image36 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

At Soundgarden we grab a beer and head outside. It's a beautiful day so far but it is quite windy, I manage to knock a spliff together despite the gusts. The main reason we're here is to head to Foodhallen to fill our bellies. C has a burger, M a burrito while KC and I head just round the corner to place he knows for curry baguette. While we're eating we realise I've had a mishap. After my last visit I started a series of coffeeshop illustrations, I'd printed out ones I'd done of places that still exist and had meant to gift them to the coffeeshops on my way round. Unfortunately I'd left them somewhere along the way. If anyone happened to find a poster tube with pictures of Mr K, Grey Area, YoYo, Balloon and TK feel free to keep em, I'll print out another lot next time.

Nice and full we need a thirst quencher, me and M head to Mr K so he can pick up (Gelato) first. First time visit and a slight faux pas made by not knowing you needed to be buzzed in, fumbling away to no avail before being allowed in. We meet KC and R in Cafe Brandon just up Oude Leilestraat from Grey Area. KC had been banging on about this place to me for a while and I could see why. The place consists of a small bar area and a fairly large lounge. The entire place is filled with curious items, ephemera, pictures of Dutch aristocrats and retro Ajax memorabilia. It seems a mainly local haunt and although I didn't ask it didn't scream smoker friendly - there are a couple of benches outside but I wasn't there too long. Anyway it really is a very quirky place and well worth a visit.

Image40 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image39 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

I have itchy feet and a need for tunes so I tell the lads I'll see them in Batavia and go for a stroll. Headphones on, bit of the King Khan & BBQ Show makes perfect walking music. I mooch around Herengracht, Brouersgracht, purposefully aimless. I'm tempted by Siberie but decide to pass. Beautiful part of town this. Onwards to the Batcave to meet T, the Dwarf etc who have been to Coffeeshop Amsterdam amongst others.

Image45 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Image44 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

The boys have managed to secure the window seat and a pleasant session ensues, there's been a fair amount of walking so far so it's good to take the weight off. As we gaze out of the window we notice some video being made outside Voyagers. There's a guy with a phone on a selfie stick and a boom Mike filming this couple talking as they walk up the side of the canal. All of a sudden this very strung out cracky looking guy just walks up to them and looks like he's asking for a light or something. Totally ruined their shot. The guy being filmed is not happy but they have no choice but to start again. T has the devil in his eye. As they start filming again he makes his way outside, a minute later he appears in view, casually strolls behind the couple and starts waving his scarf. Shot ruined again, T just smiles and saunters off. Bloody Brits abroad!

Of today's purchases so far, the Johnny Blaze was decent, Amazing Haze very racy, I found this decent value, I thought the SSH Block to be somewhat average, but at the price maybe I'm judging it a little harshly. Nicole hash was decent but I can't remember much about the Rollex as I smoked that later on.

Earlier in the day I'd seen an Instagram post proclaiming the return of 24K Gold on the menu at Baba. This is one of my favourite strains from the past so I persuaded the Dwarf to accompany me. I may have been somewhat economical about how far it was from Batavia. Anyway he enjoys the walk back along the waterfront, all lights and chrome it provides a different vista to much of the city and is quite beautiful at night. Unfortunately later that night, the Dwarf realised his toenail had detached itself during our walk and his toe had been pissing blood ever since. I felt really bad about this, I'd dragged him up there and stomped at breakneck pace, and to make matters worse we had a McDonalds on the way back, neither of us eat it normally yet I think it constituted the only sit down meal of the trip to this point.

Image41 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

Back at Batavia, a quick smoke and a drink and we're off to Belgique, there's a theme developing here. We enjoy a few Brandts and joints and the crew decide to head back. I don't feel like I'm done though and so go on a solo wander.

Image42 by Ben Sinister, on Flickr

A thought occurs to me and I first head to Bagheera, I pop my head in and lo and behold 24K is here too. Don't tell the dwarf! From here I head to Green Place, I have a look at the Donnie Brasco and something else I've forgotten, I want to keep my options open and there's other places I want to check too so I tell the female budtender "Thank you, I may be back shortly", she shrugs and turns away. I nip over Nieumarkt to Solo, nothing is screaming at me on the Indica list so I fire over to Het Gelderse. In the end I settle on a gram of Lemon Pound Cake and head back to Green Place. A guy serves me this time, I ask to take a look at the Purple Zookies. Quick as a flash he's weighed a gram out and tossed it across the counter at me like a used tissue. I'm too stoned to argue and tired of trekking so I pay up and vow never to return.

I wander back to Suzies for a nightcap. The Purple Zookies is pretty twiggy, not impressed. LPC is better, pretty strong but not much of a taste. There's a group of Scandinavian young adults on the next table digging Phil Collins a little too enthusiastically. As the singalong lurches into its sixth number I roll one for the walk, sup up and head off.

I'm in a lovely stoned haze walking back to Museumplein, all alone, a little merry too. It was so calm and peaceful, the moonlight playing off the canals and the beautiful illuminated bridges, but why can you never find a public urinal when you need one? 😅

Day 3 Smoke List

1g Nicole Kush Hash - €12 - De Kade
1g Johnny Blaze - €16 - De Kade
1g - Rollex - €13 - De Kade
1g Amazing Haze - €11 - DNA

1g 24K Gold - Baba
1g Lemon Pound Cake - €14 - Het Gelderse

Another fine write-up HTN, thanks. Great pics too. Stayed at Rookies a few times years ago. The staff was always top notch and their breakfast was always fresh and made to order.
Nice write up on DNA and De Kade. Was going to hit them up this past April, but will definitely look them up this October.
Looking forward to Day 4

Thanks AzLaker. Yeah, without wanting to come across as the De Kade marketing Co. It's rapidly becoming a firm favourite. Good choice, quality and price. I genuinely think if it was more central then it'd be right up there in terms of popularity. DNA is handy and they often stock some interesting strains but De Kade is the real gem of the Two.

Do Rookies still do rooms? I'd happily stay there if so.

Have a great time in Oct!

I think they turned the Hotel into a Hostel if I'm not mistaken.
Hopefully by October everything will be back to a somewhat normal state.
