420 Boat Trip.

Post by Trad »

Boat trip up-date.

The link that DC supplied was great. Six person, self-piloted electric boats...perfect for a bunch of stoners, no supervision.....  8) I went through the booking process and found that the company closes at sunset (I guess they don't want people getting lost in the canals after dark.) so, the last time slot we can book the boats on the 20th is 1730 hrs (5:30 pm) and that conflicts with the Nes meeting.

Any other locals have suggestions for rental companies or have a buddy with a boat that wants to make same $$$ and have a blast doing it?

This boat was put forward earlier and seems to fit the bill:- http://www.rentaboatamsterdam.com/open- ... vy-orsted/

That boat in the link sure seems to fit the bill, dont know if we are looking at just the hour or 2 hours. But seeing as a lack of toilet facilities might be an issue for some of the beer drinkers among us prehaps an hours hire might be better?. That boat at what, €207 for upto 20 people, even if only 10 of us go on a boat at that price then half full is still only €21 each per hour.

Hey Dave J,
There is a two hour minimum on all the rentals on that site. That would be about the same cost if we get the full twenty.
I agree whole heartedly about the toilet becoming an issue over 2 hours.
Another thing to consider is the fact that it is an open boat, if the weather is bad it could be a nasty trip....freezing cold or rain drizzling down AND needing a piss....   8) Don't think we would have a large turnout in that case...I wouldn't be going that's for sure....

DC's link is great, but the weather has to be good if we go with the open boats. I would prefer the afternoon rental as it's generally some degrees warmer than in the morning or evening. I think the toilet will be no problem even if we go for a longer trip than 2 hours as we can go where we want on our own, and there are some places with 'waterfront terras', we can use for tolilet breaks I guess (light blue points on their map). on their map you can also see how long it takes to get back to them from certain points. a two hour trip will be not enough for a roundtrip to brouwersgracht and back to them!!! 3 hours min. for that, but long underwear and a warm bobble cap are a must.

that boat is great too but the toilet issue can be a problem and the number of attendee must be fixed as it's not chaep.

if we go in the evening I would def. need a 'saloon boat' but then two hours are enough because of the toilet issue and we can't go where we want with a skipper on board. so a coffeeshop (toilet stop) will not be possible with a 'saloon boat'. I guess smoking is not allowed on a 'saloon boat', that will be a ko issue for me!

I don't care about the date, 19th-22th are ok for me. the 18th and 23rd will be bad as this are my arrival and departure days.

this are just some of my thoughts, a little brainstorming...

Also not bothered about the date either as I'm happy to go with the majority. Well the dates of either the 19th, 20th or the 21st suit me as I get in on the 18th evening and fly out on the 22nd evening and dont fancy to much action on the afternoon of the 22nd cos I'd worry about missing my flight lol.

More input from me. The single big boat might at first look a better idea. But as commented on by Colina there would be a number of concerns. The main ones being needing a minimum number of persons to make it viable (but at least 13 or 14 in my opinion for the 2 hour hire) , lack or being able to do "our own thing". Plus there is the issue of having to cater for 10-20 people and there ideas.

I'm warming to the idea of the self ride 6 man boats. But as a non swimer myself I'd be some what concerned about how steady the boats are. Though the site linked to does state life jackets and steady boats. But having more 6 person boats (but I'd suggest for space wise to put 5 persons in each?) would certainly give us more flexability to do what we want on the boat and go where we want. And would certainly allow us to go futher and have a coffeeshop stop if doing the 3 or 4 hour hire.

So unless we can get a big boat that will allow us to smoke or go where we might want to (with hopefully a cs break stop) then prehaps those 6 man boat things would be the best option?.

boaty.nl detected at google earth...
the boats look ok so far for me, but I now think the same as Dave J already suggested 4-5 people maximum per boat. anyway that would not be more than 25 euro for a 4hour trip per person. and they have enough boats as you can see on the picture.

Yeah, we could sure hit some decent distant cs's on a 4 hour hire, even if only a buy and fly on a couple.

that could be the route for a 4 hour trip, with lots of nice spots and coffeeshops next to the canal. on this route we would see the Amstel Hotel, the Amstel Sluizen, the Magere Brug, The theatre Carre, the Hermitage, the Blauwbrug, the Goude Bocht, the house with the heads, the ex greenpeace headquaters building, Anne Frank house, Westerkerk, Rijksmuseum...
the coffeeshops we would pass are Stix, Amnesia, Siberie+Doors+Rokerij, Paradox (quick side trip), Tertuila + Johnny, Easy Times, Noon and Kabouter.

after the boat trip we could have steak at cafe loetje and close the day at de graal.

just a suggestion...

I notice down the bottom of that map if there was a very slight detour we could park up and hit Mellow Yellow and or Little if they are worth a visit?. Assuming it's easy to park and get off in that area?.

what about steak at cafe loetje that day of the boat trip (maybe the 21th would be great) and cafe de klos on the 20th? I like both but cafe loetje is a must for me really outstanding!

a stop there is surely possible. but i think mellow yellow is better to reach on the way to boaty or on the way back in the afternoon/evening as the tram stop is not far and it's just a 10min walk from albert cuyp market.

I think noon and mellow yellow have the same stuff as they are connected. Noon would be next to a canal.

Back in 2007 AzLaker organised a canal cruise on the 21st. The boat broke down so it didn't happen but quite a few people turned up and we had a good session in the Rookies instead.

An armada of Boaty boats sounds fun. Their starting point is way down in the south beyond de Pijp though. A covered boat would be great as long as they allow smoking.

In the past few years the weather has been really kind to us. It wasn't cold for the 2009 boat trip and even last year I think it was the lack of rain that was keeping the volcanic ash in the air and grounding the planes. With luck there will be no rain or ash this year.

As suggested in the party thread, is interested parties ok with the 21st?. If as suggested there will be loads of t&t's on the 20th that would probably reduce those that might turn up for the boat trip if that were also planned for the 20th. And with a 3\4 hour trip on the little boats if we cant find a big un cheap and "flexable" enough then there would be little chance of fitting a 2\4 hour boat trip in on the 20th too?. But of cause not everyone will attend eveny planned event anyways. But if we can maxamise the chances of getting more members on the boat trip then surely thats a good thing?.
