Have booked flights and am trying to choose an area of the city to stay. I'd like our base to have plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Also, having no contacts I'll be looking to pick something up preferably without hanging round parks and train stations!! Wish i could jus forget about it for the weekend but i never seem to sleep if i dont find something!! So, bearing those things in mind does anyone have any recommendations of an area or place that would be good to stay?? A smoker friendly apartment would be the preferred option but happy with hotel with big windows or balcony.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks all

I like Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Neukölln is good too. But last time I stayed in Mitte. It's easy to get around by bike and train anyway.
It's not difficult to get sorted ime, just follow your nose. Take a walk along the Spree in the early evening, or wander about the areas already mentioned. Like elsewhere I ignore any propositions and always quiz the locals.
On your travels about look up at the balconies of the humoungous apartment blocks. There's often a lot going on.

Thanks very much! I originally posted in the Germany section but it got moved to here. Thought it'd been gazumped by all the Amsterdam plans so thanks for spotting it and taking time to reply.
I had kind of had a rough plan to stay in Friedrichschain so am gonna book something there soon. Get there quite late in the day (10pm on a monday) so will be looking to go straigt out to eat and for a few drinks locally. That being the priority wont hav a chance to stroll around looking so would be heading for bars etc where there may be the sort of locals you refer to. Seen places such as Yaam and Tacheles mentioned but think the latter may now be closed.
Thanks again for the help. Will try and remember to report back after my trip!

Be aware that there used to be a 'zero tolerance' policy in that area meaning that every quantity of weed (even e.g. 0,1g) would cause legal actions.
I don't know if that is still the case, though.
