Differences between types of mirrors

A mirror is not only a tool for checking our reflections, but also a decorative item that can add color to your room. There are quite a lot of designs on the market, but all of them can be categorized into 6 types: plane, spherical, one/two-way, silvered, acoustic, and non-reversing.

⊹ Below, we will show you details about each type of mirror.

Plane Mirrors

⊹ You can say this is the most common type of mirror; even the one you are using is most likely a plane type.

⊹ A plane mirror is designed to show an exact image of the object, so the surface of the mirror must be flat. This is the reason why it is the most common mirror among its other counterparts, as everyone wants to know their exact reflection, after all.

⊹ The plane type also comes in many sizes and shapes, be it square, rectangular, triangular, circular, and even some custom shapes like a bird, tree, etc. – you can find them on the market.

⊹ A plane mirror is created by using a thin piece of plate glass that not only generates great images but also protects the surface of the mirror, making it slow to tarnish and last for a long time.

Spherical Mirrors

⊹ If you have ever been to a mirror house, you will know what a spherical mirror is. Instead of showing the original reflection of the object, they either magnify or shrink the object's reflection.

⊹ You will notice that this type of mirror is used on street corners or on vehicles, and their purpose is to enlarge any vehicles that are coming nearer so that any drivers can notice beforehand, preventing any likely accidents. Or you can also notice them in a jewelry box, globes, etc., for they can amplify any artistic feature of the object they are reflecting.

⊹ You can check if a mirror is spherical or not by touching its surface; it should feel either bulging out or curved inward.

⊹ The spherical mirror also comes in many sizes and shapes: they can be small and rectangular or large enough so you can see the image from far away.

⊹ Their material is usually glass or high-polish metal, which are always of high quality. You would think that the price of a spherical mirror would be high, but it is actually pretty reasonable since they are used a lot in many items due to their versatility.

One – or Two – Way Mirrors

⊹ If you watch a lot of police-related movies or TV shows, you would have noticed that there is always a type of glass installed in interrogation rooms; this glass can be seen through from the outside, but people inside the room can only see their reflection. This is a one-way mirror, or you can also call it a two-way; it is the same type.

⊹ The way they work is that instead of reflecting all light, they let some pass through. Together with the appropriate brightness, they can create an illusion of one side being see-through and one side reflecting.

⊹ They are used for installing a hidden camera, creating a wall in an interrogation room, in some university classrooms, or some special room that is used by a large company.

Silvered Mirrors

⊹ They are pretty similar to plane mirrors but are coated with a highly reflective solution, like silver. They are made to reflect all types of light wavelengths, so they are mostly used in the bathroom or for any mirror that is decorative in nature.

⊹ Any mirrors that are passed through a silvering process can become a silvered mirror, so the silvered type can come in all types of frames.

⊹ Because of the long-lasting quality the silver, this kind of mirror is slow to dull and lasts for a long time.

⊹ Some of the best of products that can serve as an example include: Beveled Circle Wall Mirror by Hamilton Hills and Fab Glass and Mirror Rectangle Frameless Wall Mirror.

Acoustic Mirrors

This type of mirror is special because instead of reflecting light like all other conventional mirrors, the acoustic mirror reflects sound waves.

Instead of glass materials, the acoustic one is made from something called a parabolic dish, which is very sensitive to sound from a specific direction. They are mostly used for picking up sound from a long distance away; for example, in the past, they were widely utilized by the military to catch noise from enemy aircraft from very far away.

Non-Reversing Mirrors

⊹ There is nothing special about this type of mirror, as it is consists of two normal mirrors attached to each other at an angle of 90 degrees. Their purpose is to show the reflection of objects in two different directions. They are mostly used in commercial applications and can be found commonly in public WCs or dressing rooms.

⊹ A bifold or trifold mirror can be considered as a non-reversing mirror as their usages are pretty similar.

Conclusion

⊹ With this many types of mirrors, you can be confused about which to choose for your purpose. If you wish to decorate your home or your room, you can use the silvered mirror, or if you just want to check out your face, a plane type is good enough. You can purchase a spherical one for your vehicle mirror, as it can help avoid getting in an accident. For the one-way, acoustic, and non-reversing mirror, these are usually utilized by big companies, or when you want to open a store. You can find the best products by checking the product reviews on each type on the Internet, or you can ask some experts for more details.
