buying transit card from US??

Post by MinnBobber »

HI,
I'm coming to AMS the end of May and want to buy a "personalized chipcard" but they only sell online. Senior citizen so with that card I can get sr transit rates. They only accept "iDEAL" payment service, so no credit cards/ no paypal.

Any way for a US resident to sign up for iDEAL?
Any non-NL folks who were able to buy the card?

Schedule looks like 3 days in Haarlem. Then Amsterdam Nord for 3 days with daily trips to Almere.

Found the below. Probably won't work for a short stay if you need to wait for them to send you the card at your hotel.

Staying in the Netherlands for a longer period?
If you will be staying in the Netherlands for a longer period, you can also apply for a personal OV-chipkaart. You can then add a pass to this and you will receive an automatic age discount. If you live in Belgium, Germany or Luxembourg, you can apply for a personal OV-chipkaart online. This card will then be sent to your home address. If you live in another country, you can purchase an application package for € 10.50, at an RET, Arriva or Connexxion counter. You can use this package to apply for a personal OV-chipkaart. The OV-chipkaart can then be sent to an address in the Netherlands, such as your hotel.
