Trainspotting - coffeeshop licence numbers

Post by Lemming »

On my most recent visit I started a new project. As well as taking hundreds of pictures of coffeeshops, I began trying to get close-ups of window stickers.

Jolly Joker

The green and white sticker shows a number, 006 in this case. These stickers have been in windows for the past 20 years or so but I've never seen a list of the numbers.

The second sticker is a slightly more recent innovation I think. It carries more details of the licence. All shops appear to be permitted to open from 7am until 1am but many open later or close earlier than this. The licence applies to the premises rather than the operator, hence the address on the sticker. The most interesting information on this sticker is the date on which the licence expires.

From the countless shops I photographed I managed to compile the following list:

Licence No | Name (Expires month/year)
003 Basjoe (Jan 18)
006 Jolly Joker (May 18)
010 The Bulldog No. 90
011 Paradox (Jun 16)
016 Het Gelderse
025 Funky Munkey (Dec 17)
028 Boerejongens Centre (Jun 16)
029 Siberie
036 Balou
044 Old Church 2 (May 18)
047 Johnny (Apr 17)
048 Reefer (Aug 18)
054 Betty Too (Jun 18)
060 Bluebird (Oct 16)
083 Tweede Kamer (Jan 19)
084 Central
085 The Saint (Oct 16)
089 Kadinsky (Front Page) (Aug 17)
090 Kadinsky (Aug 17)
092 Grey Area (Feb 17)
096 El Guapo
109 Picasso
110 High Time
182 Solo
184 Prix d'Ami (Sep 16)
190 Old Amsterdam (Jun 18)
216 Rick's Coffeeshop at the Wild Style (Jun 17)
234 Greenhouse Namaste
236 Utopia (Jul 16)
239 Green Place
243 Feels Good (Apr 16)
245 Stones Corner
246 De Kroon
C01 Baba (Feb 18)
C03 Hugo
C04 Sensemillia (Mar 18)
C06 Yin Yang (Dec 18)
C07 The Wauw Shop (Dec 16)
C08 Freedom (Jan 18)
C13 De Republiek (Jul 16)
C35 Chapiteau (Apr 19)
D01 2e Cheech & Chong's (Jul 18)
D05 Coffeeshop Kashmir (Jun 17)
J09 Boerejongens West
K06 Basjoe (west) (Aug 16)
K08 De Prijs (Apr 19)
--- Vondel

Notes: Stones Corner, Yin Yang and Wauw Shop had their numbers printed upside down. I don't know whether this is significant. Vondel had a blank white blob with no number.

If you can help me to add more shops to this list I'd very much appreciate it.

Am I the only trainspotter here? Nobody got any more of these?

I'd love to collect more of these numbers. For instance, what was shop 001?

No your not the only one, we have to dig into the old boxes of photos and memorabilia from 20 years ago :? and find the coffee shop tourist map that was put together by the same people who started the green and white registration, when we do I'll scan and post it. :) That map was a great map as it had the coffee shops as well as the tram and bus stops and some tourist info, and it was free. :D

Hey Lemming, great idea. Thanks for everything you do for the site. I just happened to be in town and picked up a few.

Best Friends II. 082
La Tertulia. 069

By the way I always thought that Rusland had license 001. Not positive about that.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Good to know I'm not alone.

I was under the impression that the stickers were issued by the town council but I could be wrong. I think they started to appear around the mid-90s, when the shops were first licensed and closures began.

I'm intrigued by this idea of a map by the same people who issued the stickers. That would suggest that they weren't issued by the council. I have quite a few ancient maps, including a few of the BCD ones, which were green but didn't have licence numbers on.

Regarding Rusland, I couldn't see a number there when I passed by. They had one of the other stickers showing that their next renewal is due in June 2018. If it was based on age then you might expect Rusland, Bulldog or Mellow Yellow to have 001 but Bulldog No.90 has 010.

here is the scan from the map that was given away by the "Bond van Cannabis Detaillisten" I believe this was coffee shop owners setting up standards in an attempt to prevent the government from regulating. We picked up this map in 1996-7 back when coffee shops were allowed to advertise. There are 7 more scans to display the whole Map.

Thanks Willjay. All good info and not a hijack at all.

I've actually got a couple of editions of that BCD map. It's a very fine map featuring several late lamented shops.

As I remember it, the BCD was created around the same time that licensing began in the mid-90s. Many of the better shops joined the BCD and the early rounds of closures mostly took out inferior shops that were not BCD members.

I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows better but I don't think the BCD was responsible for the licence numbers or the green and white stickers with numbers on. Certainly my BCD maps don't feature the numbers or the stickers.
