Sad to announce that "Slimline" Peter is no longer with us

Post by Lemming »

I saw a mutual friend of ours ("Brian-UK" on here) and he passed on the sad news that Peter had succumbed to cancer late last year.

Peter was entirely responsible for making this forum happen.

It started back in 2005 when I was visiting Brian-UK and Peter was there.
I was telling them about how popular the ACD had become and about the stream of emailed reviews that I was dealing with.
I said that some correspondents had mentioned a forum that they were members of (Channels) and how I was interested in adding something similar to my site.
I knew that it wasn't possible to do anything interactive on the FreeUK space and also knew very little about forums generally.

Anyway, Peter said that he'd love to host an ACD forum and that he had the knowledge and means to do so.
This was fantastic news and, sure enough, over the following days he created a forum on his server and told me how to use it.
The rest, as they say ...

I will attempt to get some kind of message of condolence to his wife, maybe I should mention how grateful we all are for what he gave to us.

In the meantime I'd like to dedicate the Forum to Peter.
As it lives on here it can act as a memorial to its founder.
He lives on in this place he created.

Do you have any other suggestions on how we can keep his memory alive? Any suggestions on a message that I could put in a belated card to his wife would also be appreciated (as you'll have gathered, I'm not very good at this stuff).

It is always sad when one of the "Founding Fathers" pass!

I thank Peter for his contribution to the enjoyment and education that this site has provided me!!

Perhaps, a Slimline award could become part of the 4:20 celebration. Given to the highest rated coffeeshop outside of Amsterdam/Harleem or something for the coffeeshop that contributed the most to the Cannabis Family (Culture), or.......?

+1 nsfe

@ Lemming , if you happen to know Slimline's fav CS if any, maybe a memorial t&t smoke could be added by those attending 420 this year
Sending out the good vibes to those that need them right now :-)

As far as I know Peter never visited a coffeeshop. I don't know that he ever even visited Amsterdam. He liked a bit of low-grade hash mixed with tobacco occasionally but wasn't really a stoner. It was his love of computers that led him to create this forum, not a love of cannabis.

There's no reason why we shouldn't have a memorial T&T but the choice of coffeeshop will have to be ours.

If I can get a card to his widow I think I'd like to tell her that a community he created lives on but I'll probably not emphasise the cannabis aspect.

The Conscience of a Hacker

By The Mentor a.k.a. Loyd Blankenship

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers.
"Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after
Bank Tampering"...

Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's
technobrain ever take a look behind the eyes of the Hacker? Did you ever
wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded
him?

I am a Hacker, enter my world....

Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most
of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...

Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a comupter. Wait a second,
this is cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake it's
because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...
Or feels threatened by me...
Or thinks I'm a smart ass...
Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing
through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an
electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencys
is sought... a bored is found.

"This is it... this is where I belong..."
I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked
to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby
food at school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you
did let slip were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by
sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had somthing to
teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in
the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the
switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of the service already
existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by
profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you
call us criminals. We seek after knowledge, and you call us criminals.
We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religous
bias... and you call us criminals.
You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and
lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the
criminals.

Yes, I am a crimial. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is
that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look
like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something you will never
forgive me for.

I am a Hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this
individual, but you can't stop us all. After all... we're all alike.

Rest assured Peter liked something about Lemmings. To offer, coordinate, and follow through like that after a single meeting speaks volumes. Then Lem even acts as sole admin. A real admin too, not one of these new age fucks who censor speech. Any great computer mind would be totally against censorship. This is the best pot forum on the net as a direct result of a computer guys rightious assessment of a human. He had to have been a real well rounded fellow. May he rest in peace.

Technology has changed so much since 2005. A 4/20 TnT at the most technologically advanced (read who has and will dedicate bandwidth) for a huge video/chat party for all who can't make it to be there virtually.
