Silk Road, the now-defunct online marketplace for illegal drugs and other goods, is getting the movie treatment. 20th Century Fox has commissioned best-selling author Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) to adapt the story of Ross William Ulbricht’s Internet drug empire for the silver screen.

The FBI took down Silk Road in early October. Since then the saga has caused quite a stir in the film world; there was a stampede for movie rights to Ulbricht’s story. According to Deadline, the movie will follow the rise and fall of Silk Road and investigate 29-year-old Ulbricht's past, as well as allegations that he hired a Silk Road user to kill another user who was blackmailing him.

Lehane’s script will be based on an article that Joshua Davis is currently writing for Wired. Davis and partner Joshuah Bearman recently launched Epic, a publishing platform that hosts content with an eye towards stories that could work as screenplays. Bearman wrote the Wired article that became the box-office hit Argo.

Ulbricht, who went by the nickname “Dread Pirate Roberts,” may not be so pleased by his newfound fame. He is currently in federal custody and faces charges of narcotics trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering.
