Yes, Cruisers, The Smoking Ban On Ships Extends To Marijuana

Now that's one expensive bag of marijuana.

Bermuda's Royal Gazette today reports an American visiting the island nation this week on the Norwegian Dream has pleaded guilty to bringing in marijuana and faces a stiff fine of $1,500.

The Gazette says William Paxman of Maine admitted to being the owner of the .56 grams of the drug that Bermuda police officers found in his cabin. The news outlet says officers searched the cabin after callers reported a strong smell of marijuana emanating from it.

Bermuda is famous for its low tolerance for illegal drugs, including marijuana, and the Gazette says the judge ordered Paxman to pay the $1,500 fine immediately before he could leave the country.

The Norwegian Dream is on a seven-night cruise to Bermuda this week out of Boston that included a four-day stop in the town of St. George's. The ship was scheduled to leave Bermuda today to begin the two-night crossing back to the United States.

It's not the first time Bermuda has cracked down hard on a cruiser found posessing marijuana during a visit to the country. A New Jersey plumber visiting Bermuda last year on the Norwegian Crown who was caught with a few grams of marijuana and metham*etamine was fined $6,000, and the judge in that case told the cruiser he was lucky he wasn't on his way to Bermuda's West Gate prison.
