Love it , used to be right into a haiku or two back in my Beat days (dunno if I was sticking to the syllable count though)

Japanese phrasing demands 5-7-5 to match it's linguistic peculiarities. In english they're either done 5-7-5 or 3-5-3 or 2-3-2 due to the relative ease of being hyper succinct in english compared to japanese. In any event they're not strict. Basho varied his syllable count quite a bit - it's the evocative nature of the image painted that counts!

Oh and you're supposed to ideally show somehow what season you're in and the last line should be able to stand on its own as well as going with the first two!

Thanks for all the explanations "CannaSir" Gotta have a go, but i keep running out of fingers and forgetting were i am.

Dig out some of the past efforts "Cisco"!! ....and give us some new ones. "CannaSir" said it should tie in with the seasons, so i'm going with plenty of pissing rain!!

Got to have a think about this. Bet it would be easier when heavily stoned!!!
