In honor of #TBT, Marijuana.com features a slice of hemp history on every Thursday.

Before the Silk Road and BitCoin were around to help facilitate online drug deals, finding drugs on the world-wide web wasn’t so easy. However, online drug transactions date much further back than you’d expect.

A recent article on The Guardian points out that some smart college kids in the early 70s (over 40 years ago) at Stanford and MIT enacted what was likely the first online transaction. Oddly and hilariously enough, the exchange between the brainiacs was for a big old sack of bud.

As an excerpt from internet history book “What Dormouse Said” illustrates, these wise college students used “Arpanet” to make the first ever online drug transaction:

"In 1971 or 1972, Stanford students using Arpanet accounts at Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory engaged in a commercial transaction with their counterparts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before Amazon, before eBay, the seminal act of e-commerce was a drug deal. The students used the network to quietly arrange the sale of an undetermined amount of marijuana."

With cell phones and encoded apps for communication, trying to find California weed in Massachusetts has become a lot simpler these days. And fortunately, Massachusetts has followed in California’s footsteps with its own medical marijuana program (coming in 2015).

Fortunately, finding weed all over the world is no longer a scavenger hunt. Because there’s an app to help you find the best weed where it’s legal to do so.

And soon, those Weedmaps will live all over the world."
