Mokum???

Where does "Mokum" come from as a name for Amsterdam? I don't think I ever saw it before I started reading this forum.

Basically it means safe place, Amsterdam was one of the few during WWII.

Thank you FBN. I never thought of using wikipedia, or Google, to search out the meaning of a Dutch word. I thought the results would come back in Dutch. Oh, well. I'll smoke'em in Mokum.

i believe the term mokum was used long before ww2, the nederlands especially amsterdam was a safe haven for jews fleeing persecution from all over europe, especially Spain, Portugal & Italy (i think the spanish inquisition had something to do with this), even in the u.k jews were persecuted until cromwell came into power, later came the next wave of refugees from eastern europe, persecuted by the cossaks & soon after ww2 broke out & holland was once again a safe haven, until the nazis invaded
