Most of the other New England states are working to follow suit, just a little more time is needed.
People do have the intestinal fortitude, it's the ignorant yet powerful minority that continues to block progress.
Have a close look at the majority of bible thumping southern states for a more definitive example to which I speak.

West Coast - check...
Mountains - check...
East Coast - almost...
Midwest, Southwest, Southeast and South - eunuchs...

The above speaks volumes as it pertains to American culture... comes as no surprise or revelation to the well informed.
