He's gone?...fek, haven't been down there in ages. That sucks. It was always hit and miss whether it was good or not, but If ya came from the UK and Ireland then he was more often hit than miss. Closest to a proper chippy in town. Dag nabit!.Kermit wrote:No its gonecantona7 wrote:had this place recommended to me. heard they serve pies, pastys, fish and chips, etc. anyone tried them?
"had this 'place' reccomended to me"......it's the way ya tell them, comic genius!.

No its not the same its one of them Vlamese frites places now, that was the remodeling. It closed at christmas and he went abroad to live.
No conspiracy theory here, sorry folks
We had a thread on it around the start of the year after i discovered it had gone and starved for 3 days
which i have tried to find, i will keep looking. Think the nearest similar place is Den Haag
And here it is https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/viewt ... fish+chips
and some more info http://forum.expatica.com/Fish-chips-t105257.html
I dont do conspiracy just the facts

^^What did you eat there? its 100% a Vlaamese Frites place now, whereas before it was as close to an english chippy you could get. HP sauce, curry sauce, pies, pastys, decent chips, mushy peas and loads of salt and vinegar (FISH WAS CRAP)^^

I was there too in April and it was deffo not Als Fish and chips and again in june 09 also feb 09. Pheraps you got so use to seeing it as you walk past that you just think it was there instead of the bright red place thats there now.
It is still there on google street view but the shots are old as fuck now

Same name? only if you google it and it comes up on the google map with street view. which is well out of date.
If thats the case i wont be starving next trip but the sign clearly said Vlaamese frites which are deffo not chips, as for the big piece of fish thats new too. The bastards only use to do crappy frozen fillets oh and fake PUKKA pies.
I am due in soon and will clarify this with some pics and a try the food as long as they are not Vlaamese frites but i doubt very much it is anything of what it used to be.
Let us know what the deal is, Kermit - I know there's much healthier food options available in Amsterdam, but a decent piece of fish n chips? It's hard to beat...
<cue the Mission Impossible music>
Your mission, Kermit, should you choose to accept it, is to verify the continued operation of Big Al's and test that fish to see if it still comes close to British standards...

Well i tried to try it, the fish went in the bin as it was a birds eye fillet thing that was over cooked like a rubber sole. The chips (Frites) where not bad but still nothing like they was and NO HP SAUCE
WTF. TBH i think they realised they where missing out on cash so stuck some D.I.Y menus in the window . Nothing like it was but i realy wish it had been but never mind THE BURGER BAR is round the corner

Well at least you found it this time Kermit.....and your apology accepted.Kermit wrote:Well i tried to try it, the fish went in the bin as it was a birds eye fillet thing that was over cooked like a rubber sole.
