Staying at the De Roode Leeuw hotel (looks like it's a couple hundred meters from the Dam, on Damrak). I'm counting the days (12!)

Welcome to the forum.
You have been posted on the August and September Whos In Town pages.
You can see who else may be in town during your stay.
There is a Meet and Greet on September 5th.
By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.
https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/profi ... le&u=37080
I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.
First timers get my S G Collins recommendation
I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.
How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.
Enjoy

within the website that FlyByNite mentions there is a section entitled
How not to get hit by a bike
if you have already read this document, then that is great
if you have not read this document then
please please find some time to read it for your safety, the traffic in amsterdam is nuts and if you are smoking extra care is needed, so thanks
have a great trip ...

Thanks, Fly, and 67!
I always cross the street BETWEEN intersections, not AT them, though. True, it is jaywalking, but i much prefer to have to look in only two directions, rather than four (or 12, as it seems in some Amsterdam intersections). We'll see how that works out

it is your call of course ...
but please note that when crossing between intersection, from the pedestrian lane that you are standing on there may be a bike lane with cycles coming possibly from both directions
... who knows? ... then a car lane then maybe a tram lane and then maybe another tram lane going the other way and then another car lane and then another cycle lane with cycles coming possibly from both directions
... who knows? ... and oh yeah there may be motorcycles or motor scooters in any of those lanes going in either direction and quickly too ...
so please please take care ...
and please report back on your trip ...

Point made. And taken. Much appreciated.
I do like to write, so there is no doubt I'm going to have more than a few paragraphs to post.
Thanks again.

OK, so I told my girlfriend where I was going. I was saving telling her until it was definite I was going.
Her first comment was "do you have enough life insurance to cover your debts?"
Nothing like reminding me why I am not taking her. She can be SO not fun sometimes. Her idea of the perfect vacation was going to Key West, which is cool, but I could not make it, and did not give her grief for going without me.
But when I get to do MY perfect vacation, it's all "you're gonna die, you're never coming back" and stuff.
What a buzz kill.
EDIT: I think I'm going to hide my passport

As a regular visitor with 30+ adventures in the Netherlands I do not think you will die or become injured while in the Netherlands.
I actually feel safer in Amsterdam than I do in many US cities.
Your biggest risk of the adventure will be the road trip to the airport and home on the return.
Don't worry, be happy.
Have a great trip.
Enjoy

can I give you my girlfriends email address?
Seriously, though, I know I will be much safer in Amsterdam than in Denver. Just relating what life is like for me now. hehehe.
