I actually choose to go to Starbucks here in Paris.
At least i get a decent size cup/mug, the ambiance is ok (unless you happen to sit under the arctic air-con and can filter out the incessant pseudo-Americano-folk muzak), comfy seating and the staff are not surly but polite and helpful.
In London there is at least a choice of coffee chain with Nero coming out at No.1 for me as they offer a variety of organic treats
