Space Boy in the Dam - Part 1 (long read)
Hello guys,
Here’s my report of my latest visit from Friday 31st to April 4th - sorry it’s taken so long to compile but I felt like shit for about three days after I came back plus most of my memories are a blur to say the least.
A bit of background may help. I travelled with an old friend ‘R’. Both have been to the Dam a few times before although this was R’s first visit for about 12 years. I went there last year but was with the Mrs who doesnt indulge meaning my smoking was kept to a minimum, so this trip we’re both on a mission to get wasted. Neither of us are weed coniseurs (sp), if fact we’d smoke pig shit if it got us stoned. I’d made a long list of CS to visit and a short list of weeds to smoke.
Here’s my disclaimer:
‘The following report is based on fact, however, some of the events may not have happened in the order written, may not have happened at all, may have been dreamt while under the influence - well you know how it is!’
Friday - Day
Myself R left Cardiff Airport on a KLM flight at 6.05am - we’d both been up for the best part of 24hrs but at east we got about 20 minutes kip on the flight so arrived at Schipol at 8am their time a bit tired to say the least. A 30 minute train ride and we’re back in that city we all adore. The building work is still going on at Centraal - any one know what they’re doing? Jumped on a tram got off at the Heineken Museum and after a quick search found the apartment we’d rented on Tweede Weteringdwarsstraat - staying at Kien Apartments. Incidentally I’d recommend these to anyone that doesn’t mind staying a little way out of town. It was very spacious (which is something you rarely get in Dam), nicely decorated, kept very clean, own garden and no stairs! Result!
We dump our stuff and we’re out - it’s about 10.30am. First stop after a two minute stroll is Rookies I know a lot of people reading this will ask ‘Why?’ But I like it. It sells beer, good coffee, a pool table and you can usually get a seat. I find it works quite well as a staging post on the way out or on the way home. Also, the weed is cheap, if un-remarkable for Dam. R got the coffees in and I bought a bag of their Ultimate B.Berry 15 Euros for about 2.5 grams quickly rolled two weak-ish joints (didnt want to find myself wobbling back to the apartment after my first smoke). It smoked quite well, the first deep toke was a delight. A fresh mown-grass taste, big smiles spread across our over-tired faces. Welcome back said the grass! We got the giggles too. An hour later it’s time to make a move, I’ve explained to R that I’ve drawn up a list of CS to visit (see my post ‘Best Laid Plans’ in the Before section) which suits him. Will give us some focus (however blurry) when stoned other than wandering around in a daze - which always seems to happen to me.
Off we toddle, nicely stoned, and I feel it’s a perfect time to introduce R to the delights of the Dampkring menu. I get the beers in and send R to the dealer counter. After a long 5 minutes he’s back, drops a bag of weed on the table and exclaimed ‘Have you seen how big that fucking menu is?’ - much to my amusement. The Dampkring isnt busy - still early - and we tuck in to his bag of Black Domni Pearl Haze. Tastes very spicy, reminded me of Xmas cake. Nice strong uplifting rush/buzz. Spliffs and beers finished we both decide a few hours shut eye are in order if we want to see the evening.
Very stoned we head back but as we’re passing Rokerij it’d be rude not to pop in. The only empty ‘seats’ were those right at the back. Seats? More like rolled up bits of carpet and a table so low you can just get your legs underneath it - but not quite high enough so you can get them out again without having to kind of turn over and crawl on all fours. Not very dignified for two blokes in their mid 30s. R wasn’t too impressed, I thought it was funny as fuck - which set off the giggles again. A quick smoke and it was deffo time for a kip. Back to the apartment, another quick J and we got our heads down for two hours. It was about 4pm.
Friday - Night
Its amazing how refreshed you can feel after a quick sleep, shower, shave and change of clothes. Its 7.30pm ACD map in back pocket and we’re on our way out. To my delight I realise that at one end of our street is Mellow Yellow and the other end is Noon. Mellow Yellow can wait, there’s only one place we’re going and that’s Noon and for one reason - Blueberry. Though at some time or another I did intend getting some of the White Melon from there.
It was my first visit to Noon, couldn’t find it on my last visit. A very local CS, friendly staff, the other customers there were in-different to us - which was neither good nor bad - but one thing spoilt it for us was the music - Gansta Rap, I hate it! Anyway we got the table right by the window and rolled an almost pure joint of their Blueberry. What a smoke. Tasted, well, like Blueberries, smooth fruity and how strong is that weed? Even took my mind off the music. Wasn’t so much of a rush or anything but one moment I was fine the next I was ruined. Very strong & intense (not in a bad way). So strong that once we’d finished our drinks we left - neither of us could manage going back to the bar.
Food was now on the agenda, we decided on pizza but spent an age deciding on which of the identical Italian restaurants off the Leidsesplein we should go in. Up and down them sodding streets debating the apparent pros and cons of each restaurant which was a near exact clone of the one before. Anyway we settled on one and after a quick pizza and a beer for about 12 Euros each we were fed and watered.
The plan was to get into town and visit a few CS on the ACD map but as we stumbled up Leidsestraat towards town and I noticed Dolphins so in we went. Again this was another first time for me. Two large OJs and we headed downstairs. What a sight for stoned eyes, those lovely large booths to spread out and chill in. Me and R wasted no time, joints were built lit smoked, OJ was sipped the music was excellent, early Bob Marley - Small Axe, Mr Brown, Soul Almighty - perfect! Lying there totally wasted, in the air ‘If you are a big tree we have a Small Axe, coming to chop you down…….’ Will remain one of my fav memories of all my trips!!! After two or three hours later we decided to make a move and Abraxas was decided on as our next port of call.
We must have been stoned because we didn’t end up at Abraxas at all, after a little bit of searching we found ourselves outside of El Gupo. I was delighted as this was one of the CS I really wanted to visit, I love going places that wouldn’t normally be visited by a couple of wasted Brits. El Gupo is probably the most basic CS I’ve ever been in. And small!! About 5 booths in the style of a greasy spoon café. One booth/table left at the back. The girl working was very friendly, cant remember what we drank but R bought a bag of their Haze. When he examined it though he was a bit disappointed. Was very dry, almost powdered when broken up. Didn’t smell of much. But the place was surprisingly busy with lots of locals doing the grab and go and neither of us wanted to commit a faux pas so we gave it a go, and it more than done the trick. Both of us were now in a bit of a state. To describe us as dribbling idiots wouldn’t be too far off the mark.
After a while we were off again, walking in a straight line was hard work it was about midnight and the plan was to walk back to Dolphins, hopefully the stroll would bring us around a bit. But just around the corner we passed De Kuil. I wouldn’t let us pass this up. In we went. All the stools along the bar were empty so we sat there. Although R had a real hard time getting on his and when he was on he held onto the bar as if his life depended on it. A couple of beers and a couple of shared joints and we were both on the verge of a mental meltdown. It was then an slightly older, slightly oriental and obviously quite well to do American woman sat next to me and made the mistake of trying to engage me in conversation, all I could manage was a few mumbled words and myself and R decided it was time to make a move - home.
Neither of us can remember the walk back but I do know we had a couple of night-cap Js at the apartment. Also remember R trying to turn the apartment lights off - all 8 of them. I was lying in my bed and R had two sets of four switches to turn them off. ON, OFF, ON, ON, OFF, OFF, ON, OFF, ON, ON, ON went all the various lights as I lie there offering not-so-helpful advice and generally taking the piss. Plus when he got the lights all off the fuck-wit couldn’t find his bed.
I fell asleep chuckling to myself, very happy, very tired, very stoned. A perfect end to a brilliant day.
Other days to follow.

Please thrown in a quick line about the rental price - I can't be the only one wondering - how much/ for how much space/ for how many days?
Thanks!
Regarding the apartment, it wasn't massive but on the larger side compared to all the other places I've stayed out there. Smallish TV area, at one end then the beds then a kitchen/dining area. Have a look at these two sites.
This one is their site, which is really just a description, address and 'phone numbers (we booked direct)
http://home.hetnet.nl/~rhveenstra/
For a better idea have a look at this (excellent) booking site, which is where I found it. Search for 'Kien Apartments' and read the reviews. Good for other European cities too:
