Do you still feel the same when you go to amsterdam?

Post by Whitesox »

From the days of magc mushrooms to the days of being allowed to smoke tobacco or even buying a beer and weed in the same shop, when you take a trip down to amsterdam do you still feel the same in the red light district or even out of the red light? Is it the same feeling at night as it was back in 2001 or 2002 for u. Is the decrease of the number of coffeeshops and windows noticeable at all?

I know what your getting at man, I love the Dam just as much as anyone on here but there sees to be less coffeeshops, less Red Windows(alot less) and the no tobacco and booze is just an inconvenience

Still love the place and get that same feeling as I walk out of Central station.
One convenient location... in Africa.

I know exactly what you mean, for me I have been visiting for twenty years and the place has changed but then again so have I.I have been like many through the phase of smoking as much as possible and going as many times as i could. Then came dance music and countless nights in clubs full off chemicals which was nice at the time and gave me another reason to visit.
I now only go a couple of times a year at most and smoke a lot less but drink a bit more.I cannot tell you characterisitics of different strains after a few joints as they all blend into one!
The rld i now dont like at all . i think i have stayed there to much over the years .I do think its a nicer place to walk round now though with fewer windows and the lack of street dealers.I always ask them for a kilo and they dont know what to say!
I definitley appreciate my time there more now.Yes i get the same feeling when i walk out the front of central station except it is now like meeting a old friend. Before it was like getting off with a complete stunner, all you wanted to do was ride the life out of it!!
So sorry for the meandering reply to finish yes i still like going....pass the rizla

If i'm honest, those two points are all I really miss.

I only went once when it was still the Guilder, and it was far cheaper ( and you could get WELL over 5 grams almost anywhere  )

And Pink Floyd, well, thats the biggest loss IMO. First shop that served me weed with a smile, and lots of info on the strain and how it was grown.
Always had a top menu, and all the staff were friendly. The music was never shit and they catered for the munchies.
Oh, and the freshly made in the shop, trippy coloured space cake.....
Endure

doesent it feel likee tho that there trying to clean the rld up a little to much. It seems if they want to make it so there was no coffeeshops or windows in the first place. A normal country. No tolerance and what not

I do missing being able to get a pint and some grass in the same shop. But honestly, it's not too big a deal for me. I miss the Guilder far more, but what ya gonna do. I really could care less about the RLD, not really my thing. At this point, I could stay a week in De Pijp and be totally happy not leaving the area.

This is Amsterdam we are talking about! It has changed massively since my first visit in the early 90's but you cannot take the Amsterdam out of Amsterdam. You can always find somewhere that will let you smoke and drink at the same time, always find somewhere/one to bend or simply break the rules.

The biggest changes I have seen is junkies no longer injecting in open view on the streets...

I absolutely agree losing the Guilder was a sorry day, and EVERYTHING went up in price (I was there the day it happened!).

The RLD has also changed and I think has lost 'some' of its unique atmosphere.

Despite been an 'on the edge' city, one of the things that has stayed constant with me is the safe feeling I get from this city. A feeling I don't feel in any other capital city around the globe, even my birthplace, Manchester.

yea i miss pink floyd too. i never remember going when they had their own menu..but i went multiple times when they had their old setup/food menu. loved it. that first seat with the internet next to the stairs was my spot.

as far as the guilder goes only went once wit it back in like 1993 and i was like 8 so dont really count it.
educating myself and waiting for the next trip.

I made my first trip in '07 just before the beer n buds were separated. Coolest experience!! Came back in '08 and that was the biggest change I felt. But, luckily the Greenhouse Effect bar is still smoke friendly, and that was one of my favorites. Sorta sucks to only choose from a handfull of bars were you can toke. The Doors on Singel was also cool to drink n smoke, but no more. If only Gollum would allow weed smoke; That would be heaven. My trip this November will be my first time since the "Red Light Reduction". Interested in how that changes the vibe. Does anyone know if they reduced the redlights in the Singel/Spuistraat area as well??
