Hi Stuart,

Have you tried hotels.nl, they have maps on the site so you can see the location of the hotel.

Could try Die port van cleve, get a suite where smoking is no probs, there is a restraunt attached, parking in De Kolk (SP), near Dam square but no balcony. TBH though its not an amazing place and if you dont have a suite the rooms a pretty small.
Enjoy 8)

How about the Grand Krasnapolsky?

It's as close to Dam Square as you can get - very posh, so if their previous 4 star wasn't to their liking, the chances are the Kras will do the job.

It has a restaurant, but I'm not so sure about parking etc. You may get a good deal if you book online...

I'm very cautious about recommending places for people who i don't know - my only requirements these days are a clean bed and ensuite facilities, really... My younger days of roughing it just doesn't seem to carry the same charm any more. ;) Breakfast is a nice addition if it's included, but there's so much to choose from when you're over there, that I've never fussed if there wasn't any brekky (or if it was just too bad to suffer twice).

The one thing that seems to mess a lot of people up on arrival is the Amsterdam penchant for steep staircases, and a hotel which is fantastic for me has put friends off when confronted with the staircase of doom - this is the norm over there, but it's quite surprising how people can be totally put off by a few stairs, so it might be worth asking the question - are your friends keep-fit freaks, to whom a few stairs is a welcome wake-up to the system, or do they prefer the more sedate method of using a lift?

Good luck whatever you find, and have a great time fella!

what was the hotel they stayed at that they didnt like? I would recommend the Victoria. Its right across from central station and 5 min walk to Dam Square. I love the victoria.
