Gin and Genever

Post by SeniorHippies »

Mrs. SH's favorite tipple is a nice bit of aromatic gin and some OJ. We've heard of genever as the precursor to gin, but have never tried it. Have any forumites ever sampled it? Is it entirely different from modern gin, Bombay, Oliphant (a favorite), or Tanqueray?

Here is a brief article in the NYTimes about Bols genever.

Maybe she'll give it a try this spring.

Gin Museum

Post by SeniorHippies »

I looked it up on-line when I read your message. I'm embarrassed to say I never knew it was there. As many times as we go up and down Pauluspotterstraat, I never noticed it before. We'll check it out this spring. There's always something else to be found in Amsterdam and NL.

There is another gin museum in Scheidam, which is, I believe, in South Holland.

Thanks. Are you a drinker of the juniper?

Yes I do like gin. I have not yet been to the museum and heard about it after I came back from my last trip. I really dig our local gin: http://www.peakspirits.com/peak-spirits-products.php

Its very nice, served neat when I had it. Tastes nothing like the gins you mentioned, IMHO.

Love that place, I go there every visit to Amsterdam. In fact this particular area where that pub is located, is my favourite place in the city as there is a good concentration of really pleasant and cosy brown bars all within a few paces between one another.

You need to come to Eindhoven for the Stratumseind then! The longest 'bar' street in Europe.. used to be about 47 bars .. I know of at least 3 coffeeshops in the near vicinity too, two of them on that street ;)
