Hotel Old Quarter

Post by bigbob »

For several months I have checked HOQ on Bookings for a week-long reservation. Never stayed there before, but it seemed a good value- esp. since it seems to not ban smoking in the rooms. But, evrytime I check, there are no rooms available. I've tried multiple different dates, but same result. Has anyone else had the same experience? Is HOQ still open? Still smoker-friendly? Is it a good value?

Have you tried contacting the hotel direct http://www.oldquarter.com/ and using their web site booking page. They usually take a day to reply to requests.

I've stayed there before and had no problems booking a room direct with them. Forget using a third party to book a room at the OQ.

I have stayed their twice before and once at their sister hotel, Old Nickel. All booked through the bookings website without any problems, although the last was over a year ago so i can't vouch for it lately.

One thing i did notice when i was there was that a lot of queries or bookings etc were seemed to be done over the phone at the reception/bar. So i would give them a call at the number on their website.

Great hotel for the money btw!

Is the price you're paying any different to the price if you booked direct with the hotel? They do seem to offer different prices for mid-week rates as well as off peak winter rates when you book direct with the hotel and raise such issues in a polite way and was wondering if it was cheaper or dearer by using www.booking,com

Can anyone please confirm if Old Quater or the sister hotel Old Nikel allow weed smoking in room? Also does anyone have any preferences between the two?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

You can smoke in the rooms, just open the windows and don't abuse it. Their private seperate hotel to OQ & ON in an annexe have smoke detectors which I simply unscrewed with a Swiss Army knife and reassembled when I went out for the day.

Old Quarter is better than Old Nickel. Not stayed at Old Nickel but the bar downstairs is good though. Both are cheap budget Hotels. They have 4 parts to the their Hotel, btw, some parts in different buildings.

They reply quite fast. Had no problems finding the place or anything.

Only negative comments I can think of from staying here are:
a) the luggage room is situation right behind a table, where a couple where eating a meal. I asked the staff if I could store bag elsewhere or wait till they had finished but insisted I do it right away. I felt like a right cunt, the gap was tiny for a suitcase, the lady even stood up and helped me, I felt bad for that as I was willing to wait and not disturb them. But with effort we managed to get the case past the table and drop it in to the large large area.

b) Apparently no room for guests checking out in the large storage area who are getting a mid day flight. I know its not expected, but a number of other places we stayed in Amsterdam have been very good and allowed us to temporarily store our luggage rather than paying another 15euro for storage at the train station, just not too fun rushing around to find a place to store your baggage on the last day, shit them lockers where hard work to get working.

All in all the place was clean, the cleaners where friendly so where most of the bar staff :) Good price and location, worth staying here though, but DO NOT spend all your cash otherwise you'll have to drag your luggage with you until you go home, save it for a locker in Central station.
