I think my mate was guna come with me so round the 600 mark a month, for a 1bedroom(we can share... and we are cheap. Lol.)

Finding a 1 bedroom apartment for 600 a month inclusive, for just 6 months, 2 sharing, might be tricky, deffinately look further out past Nassaukade, Leidseplein distance.

Valo, the SVH is sort of a legal scam. Yep, while it's not compulsary to have it, it's helpful if you do and will get you hired quicker. It's a multiple choice answer test based on it's own book about working in the Horeca. Probably not as technical as the UK equivalent, perhaps more similar to english driving theory test. It's very easy to pass but costs 100 euro, 200 if you want it quickly. The thing is, for it to be actually used while in a job, you have to be on the business license, which aint gonna happen for a new employee, unless in a fully white business and even then, I doubt it. You'll feel the scam effect after you pass it.

Yea rents are f-ing sky high in the dam,The further out you go the cheaper it is! i hear zwole is good people & smoke wise,Not sure about the job front but you do hear of amsterdam regulars moving/staying out to places like arhnem/eindhoven & the like,Good luck with it anyways man.

I have seen quite a few rooms available from between €400 - €600 per month, largely depending on location and quality of housing. They seem quite regular too so i'm hoping it will be the case when i am more ready.

I see what you're saying. I can't see me getting on any licenses in the near future, so will take it as a 'need to pass basis' and will take it if necessary one day.

Rents are all relative to where you come from. Coming from a big city in the US , I do not find it too expensive rent-wise. I can't imagine Amsterdam being cheaper than Paris or London?

People with kids move out to the suburbs but then you really need a car. I can't imagine living in Eindhoven and working in Amsterdam.

My flat is a small but nice one bedroom in the Westerpark, 770e/month plus energy, phone and TV. Comes out to about 920 or so.

i'm also looking to rent for a long term stay & from what ive seen on expat rentals i seem to be looking at 850-1000 euros a month for a two bedroom apartment, is this around the going rate? i am comming over in feb regaurdless if i have a place or not! i might just need to dig at a hostle until i find somewhere.

You can find it for that. Fuck the Makelar, find it own your own. If you can stay a few weeks you will find a place.

Valo, the book for the test is over 100 euro too. Before you come over, put yourself in for the test for a month after you've arrived. You can borrow our book and I'd say if you read it trough twice without constantly falling asleep, you'll pass the test at the end of the month. Monthly tests are 200 euro, you're looking for the quarterly test at 100. For bar work. it'll get ya a job quicker.

850-1000 for a 2 bedroom apartment inside Marnixstraat or De Pijp area is cheap. Come to think of it, that aint too bad for another half mile further out either. lol It now sounds dodgey too. Depending on where it is...if it's real, take it!!.

Makelaars will charge you 1 months rent for arranging things, 1 months rent in advance and a deposit of 1 or 2 months rent, which you get back if everything is left the way you got it. Not good if yer budget is low as its around the 4 grand mark before you even get a key, (though it means atleast you're leaving with some money) but their contracts are normally rock solid so your living arrangements are secure. Their prices are generally higher than if you find a place by yourself, but if you use one it takes loads of the hassle out of the situation.

i'm going to start a toke-a-thon tour company! lol get high as fuck & show novice tourists the best places to get high & not get ripped off! or lost & robbed! lol

That sounds like a good plan! Very kind offer too, and i will certainly take you up on that when the time arrives. I'm pretty used to tests and stuff by now so hopefully will be ok. I am already looking forward to pulling my first hygienically certified pint.....sorry....large beer

This could be a very obvious question, but is the test done only in English? or should i just look out for the English version? As i notice the official SVH website is in Dutch haha.

If you check craigslist.org/amsterdam under rooms/shared, you will see rentals around $350/$400. There are also other rental categories that you might want to take a look at as well.

You have to pick the english cafe/bar version of the test.

I'd love to live in Amsterdam for a month at least. I have 4 thousand pounds atm, which i'm well aware won't last me long at all. I'm saving up until i get my next yearly bonus then i'd love to try and make the transition. I'd love to work in a coffeeshop, that would be much better then working at Waitrose. I'd even work 2 jobs or at Mcdonalds. But i'd gather you'd need dutch to work there, i'm not sure. Good luck to everyone who wants to do it. I hope i can make it a reality one day sooner then later.

How tough would it be for an American to move out to the Netherlands? In less than a year I will graduate with a degree in business management. Would that degree find me a job, or should I open my own business? I think I'd even prefer to own my own business if possible. Is this a possible dream for me to move there for good? I am not limiting myself to Amsterdam, and I plan to learn dutch.
