monthly apartment rental pricing?

I want to visit the netherlands in August 2010 for 3 months. I'd prefer to stay in Haarlem since I'm guessing I'll get lower rates on everything if I were to stay outside of Amsterdam. It doesn't have to be in Haarlem, anywhere outside of Amsterdam but, not too far if I can get good rates.

Do you think it would be possible for me to find a private 1 bedroom apartment with a private bathroom for around $600-$800 (u.s.) inclusive with utilities in Haarlem or another city not too far from Amsterdam? If not, how much do you think I would probably end up paying? Or how much time do you think it could take once I land in NL, to find a place? I'll probably have a hotel booked for a few days but, I want to stay in a hotel for as little time as possible since the costs are much higher compared to an apartment. Do you think, I could find an apartment within a few days? I really don't want to stay in a hotel for more than a week.

Any references you can provide to where I can find apartments for rent would be appreciated. I was mostly considering craigslist and a particular 'makelaar' (sp?) rental agency. The agency is more expensive of course with the fees and from what they say their properties are rented really quickly. However, I'm hearing some not so good things on here about renting from craigslist.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks

Research anything you find here before you commit or send money.

Yeah, I'm not going to send anybody money before seeing the place for myself in person.
