I was wondering how much money should I plan on spending per day in Amsterdam.

We shall be enjoying all Amsterdam has to offer -

Smart shops for some take me on a trip yummies

coffee shops for all the herb goodness

meals, snacks, bike rental

I know hard to give exact figure but I'd like to be a little prepared before we go.

What is the best way to get cash ? I'm from us - I wonder how much I'll be charged for atm fees from the amsterdam banks

Do most coffee and smart shop take credit cards or is it just cash only?

Any other good money tips are appreciated!!

This is my first post -- we are planning to go May 2010 --- may 10 - 17 or sometime around then. Anyone else going to be there then?

1st thing call your bank tell them where and when you are traveling,.
for spending money , depend what you like to eat are you going to be shopping or eating out every meal, how much do you drink/smoke, average price for a gram i would say is 10 euro, average price of a pint is about 5 euro. i dont trip anymore so i cant tell you the price of shrooms, and the RD will cost 50 euro for 15 min. i beleive thats what it is.

Yes contact your bank and ask them about fees, then contact the people who handle your investments, some of them have ATM cards that they wave the fee. However it's the exchange rate that will get you the most.

The bank card you plan to use and a back up card, those cards you tell the banks 30 days prior to leaving.

How much money, here is some budget figures to work with. All amounts are in euros:
Pot ,Hash 10 + a gram
Hotel two star 85 double 60 single
Walk away food 2.50 up
Sit down food 18 up
Museum pass 39 good through out the country for a year
125 euros a day and you will be a happy camper

Now I'm one of the old people on this sight, some of the younger ones that is there smoke budget for the day, for some that could last 2 days.

If you have Bank of America, they charge a $5 fee for using atms, but then you also pay their rate which is usually 7-8 cents on the dollar.

Don't forget to budget in the drinks at the coffee shops.

I try to bring extra euros with me. When I have extra, it is a good excuse to go back.

you could also try priceline bidding last Nov. i got the NH AMsterdam Centre for total with tax 89 us dollars. then there is the Conerhouse 35 E for a single, personally i think 125 a day is alot, but i shop atthe grocery store and eat cheap , there is alos tons of free stuff to do in Amsterdam, just let your fingers do the walking>>

well we have our hotel -- we are in a B&B for about 108 -118 a night for a double then add taxes -- includes bbreakfast - private bath and little patio for smoking - great reviews -- I didn't want to go somewhere I didn't feel comfortable touching stuff

thanks on the info - roaming around this site - I've learned a lot -- things can definately get pricey quickly

hoping to just grab a bottle of wine some cheese and bread and that be our lunch so food should be just dinner and drinks

hoping the grocery stores are easy to navigate so we can get some muchies there

I keep going back thinking we could get an apartment instead but kind of like idea of B&B and being able to ask questions and suggestion of the owners - get some local imput on places to eat and things to do...

Make sure if you grab any fruits or veg you have to weigh them yourself before going to the cashier, the scales are near the veg make sure you do this or you will feel like a total rube at the checkout cashier.

Before you set out, make a couple of copies of all important documents and financial instruments you will be bringing, ie... Passport; Driver's License; Credit/ATM Cards. Leave one copy in the States and bring a copy with you. Also write down the telephone numbers of the US Embassy and Consulate, and for the credit/ATM cards as well. Think this through and you will understand the significance.
