From where (departure airport)?
If you departed from Newark/NYC/Philly/DC/Chicago/MSP, you would have flown over the North Pole. So yes, one could easily fly to and from China on this route and see the sun the entire time.
But the statement was overnight trans-continental, and the only continent this would be possible is Antarctica.
Also something to consider is that the majority of trans-oceanic/trans-polar flights in a westerly direction are during the day and easterly direction are during the night. The main reason is business. The easterly flights generally tend to arrive at their destinations early in the morning. The westerly flights generally arrive mid-day to mid-afternoon East Coast. mid-afternoon to early evening West Coast.

Peace.

Strange, the flight you say your father flew on deviates nearly 2000km off the standard flight path from Newark to Beijing, unless there was a stop somewhere in the mid-west or west coast. http://gc.kls2.com/
The only commercial airliner capable of making a non-stop trip using this path (Newark to Beijing via Alaskan airspace) is the Boeing 777-200LR (severely weight restricted), which Continental doesn't own (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Airlines) and they are the only airlines to offer non-stop service from Newark to Beijing, using the Polar route. Non-stop Newark to Tokyo does cross northern Alaska, but not non-stop flights to/from Beijing.
Again, I don't mean to be anal, I just call 'em as I see 'em.

yea im just speaking from personal experience dunno what to tell ya. not saying they dont do the polar route but they dont always use it. yes it was continental. and the lr isn't the only plane that can go that distance. the two longest flights (18 hr 50 mins) are operated by singapore airlines. they dont operate the 777 lr and opted to use the a340-500. continental also flys nonstop newark-hk and they use the 777-200er not lr. :D as far as tokyo-newark i flew continental on the 777-200er. i didn't even hit northern alaska we got maybe a little more north than anchorage. my dad was more north. he flew home a few days before me.

the 200lr only is used on only 3 of the top 10 farthest/longest flights as far as i can see.

These types of flights are just to long for my liking. Even though I am the type that wants to get from point A to point B like yesterday, I would prefer a layover of 3-5hrs on flights greater than 12 hours. Of course the location of the layover would be foremost in my plans. Who would want to be stuck in Detroit with a 3-5 hour layover? '' And I'm sure there are worse international airports and surrounding areas to be stuck in than Detroit. Just saying.
In 1983, I flew in the upper rear passenger compartment of a C-5A from Yakota AB, Japan to Carswell AFB, TX (now Ft. Worth NAS), non stop. With two in-flight refueling missions, the flight lasted 15 1/2 hours. On the return trip, I was on a C-5A from Travis AFB, CA (flew commercial from San Antonio to San Fran) to Yakota, AB, Japan. Also two in-flight refueling missions, but with high altitude winds. This flight lasted nearly 18 hours.
Imagine flying for this amount of time and no in-flight entertainment, no laptop (didn't exist at the time), same for MP3 and similar multi-media devices. I did have a portable Sony Walkman cassette player, but can you imagine having to carry around spare batteries, not to mention those cassettes? Pain in the arse.
Now I travel with a tablet DVD player with a USB plug. I don't play DVD's, drains too much battery power. Instead, I bring along my 32 GB USB flash drive which contains movies, TV shows, documentaries, and an assortment of music. God I love technology.

Peace.

There have been occasions where I contemplated throwing either them or myself off of the plane. ':)'
The best advice I could give would be for people to save up and fly Business or First. If not, then pick an exit row or bulkhead seat. These offer the most leg room and nobody in front to worry about. Still, there's the chance that the Finklestein shit kid (Cheech and Chong) is sitting behind you.
Fuck flying, take a boat. Nice bed, three meals with silverware, no jet lag, and no one to bother or be bothered by.

Peace.

I class my self as a 'bit of a hippy', but this really brings out the dark side in me. Anyone leans their seat back on my already incredibly small space, gets my knees openly playing 'squash' with their lower back.

This is where a little consideration can and usually does go a long way. I take notice of the person sitting in front of and behind me. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks this way. Just me, myself, and I. Thanks 1980's.
I still dread the thought of flying with the seat in front of me fully reclined and me not being able to recline at all (broken seat on a full flight).
I don't expect the person sitting in front of me to sacrifice all of their comfort, just a couple of inches is all I ask. Just too easy.
Peace.

I recline my seat. That's what the button is for. It has never been an issue.

And if you're so inclined to dig your knees into someone's back instead of saying something, then you're being passive-agressive and kind of an asshole... Especially if your knees don't' need the space occupied by the seat but you just feel the need to claim it anyway.

While you're digging your knees in, is your seat reclined? Try it. It'll give you some more space and you might not need to ruin the flight of the passenger in front of you. The person behind you is doing it, so go ahead. If you already have your seat reclined, then you have no right to be bothered.
Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

I don't care too much, as long as a flight is direct. Layovers and connections suck.

Since I mostly fly in cattle class - I notice the airline has now started up-selling bulkhead and exit door seating. They are charging $25 each leg for a seat that has more leg room  I was coming back from China (12hr+ flight), and had one of these seats. Thought it helped?

Not even a little bit.

My seat was just behind the mid-cabin toilet. The problem was the only video screen on the wall is too high and too far away to see clearly. Also, the chairs armrests are fixed. Considering the flight was 1/2 empty, most people were able to lift the armrests, and laydown across 3 seats. Not the most comfortable, but miles ahead of fixed seating with no monitor. So, all of the rows in the plane were taken up by sleepers - except for me :(

And they want to charge extra for it! I got it comped - otw they'd be hearing from me.

But keep that in mind for your own airline when they start charging you for it.

And yes, I recline the chair, but usually not all the way back, unless I don't care. I'm tall, and can relate to crappy seating.

best thing they can do is have a box o donuts waiting with a big joint...both to be ingested on arrival....then everyone is fed(it aint food that's served on flights in cattle class) and mellowed out........works for me flying heathrow to portland Or,via vancouver......best legspace on a 747/400 in cattle class is near the overwing exit....worst at the cattle/business divider and noisiest is down the back(even worse on 767,also cramped at back due to the curve of the fusulage)....personally i find the best thing to do is either get baked before the flight(can lead to not getting on flight) or eat some cookies/brownies before the flight so it kicks in just after take-off then it's sleep time right across the atlantic

I recline!!! and believe no one has the front to ask me to un-recline (is that a term lol), if they did i may actually un-recline as i'm quite a nice chap :D

But it usually happens along these lines.

"i'm gunna recline after take-off and try take a nap" (obviously not on a flight to dam where the 10 minutes it takes is hardly worth it )

Person i'm flyng with "but what about the people behind u"

me, "Fuck the people behind me, i paid the same as everyone else, to use the services my economy seat offers"

This i think puts people off from asking me to un-recline, but like i said if i'm asked any request in a reasonable manner/tone i will probably do it!!!
