The best pubs/bars

Post by bridget »

I need to get a list together.

Bit fed up drinking at the same old bars.. I mean, I always end up in Europub at some point but want to try other places. I am staying just off Dam Sq but spend most evening around RLD or thereabouts but would welcome tips of any decent bars.

I like my rock music so that would be an added bonus.

cheers.

This gentleman's site is well recommended and rightly so it seems to me. http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/pubs.htm#karpershoek My bookmark is to the middle of a page, but just scroll up. It's a long story about how I'm not a real computer person. Here is a link to Amsterdam's only brouwerie. It's out past the Zoo, but it seems to be a popular place. http://www.brouwerijhetij.nl/vacature_en.htm It closes early, though. And this place was voted the best pub in NL by some paper or travel organization. I forget. http://www.olofspoort.com/main.html I'm going to try it to buy my wife a genever.

't Nes is right of Dam Square and is good cafe IMO. As well as Cafe Gollem at Raamsteeg 4, near the Singel and Spui, has over 200 beers available.

Peace,

There is bar that plays rock music all night along along Warmostraat and opens pretty late too as I (rather hazily) recall. I think it might be called Rock City or something similar.

Like you I'd like to find some decent bars out of the immediate centrum area too and will be exploring a bit more via bycycle this trip in that regard.

Pinocchio on warmoesstraat stays open late, has a smoking area. Handy if you're staying in the vicinity. Most of my drinking in Dam has been in RLD at Suzy's, Rick's, Stones, or Cocos on thorbeckeplein, which has loads of screens for the footy, pool table and also a dartboard (if you can avoid the annoyin little irish fella who always wants to play the winner). Also satellite at Leidseplein, though i've never sat indoors since the baccy ban. Stayed in here til 7am watching the mayweather/de la hoya fight and staff turned a blind eye to quite a bit going on that night.

Speaking of which, has anyone been to Cafe Hoppe? This place looks really great. I think I'll pay a visit after going to Dampkring.

This tiny area, circled in red on the map, has all the pubs below as well as a load more if you walk further up Zeedijk. Very nice places, sometimes hidden behind heavy velvet curtains, live rock or jazz bands at times, wonderful beers and packed to the rafters near the weekends with locals, where you'll be hard pressed to even get in and get served late at night. I love all these pubs and hang out here in the old part of the city a great deal. My kind of pubs, I know them well.

Not all have live music in them, btw and some are very old and traditional (I was told by one of the pubs above, that I was the first person to ever use a laptop in the bar and they didn't like it, oops)

I personally like these pubs as you can walk from one to the other in only a couple of paces. They have some awesome unusual bottled beers and the odd good draught too. Great atmosphere and vibe, very gezellig.

Don't just stick to this area, there are loads of good pubs all over I could mention but I'd be here all day listing them.

Have fun.

T'Nes is supposed to be awesome.

Watch out for the barman though, he's known for his special hospitality! You'll be able to spot him easily.
