Yeah, I know what you mean. Those beers are damn strong stuff but taste awesome. I wish I could remember all the ones I had. Some of the draught beer I had, I was reliably told is not available anywhere else apart from a dozen pubs or less in amsterdam. These strong beers, you'll never see pint glasses but lovely dedicated stem glasses and such like.

I like the Delfter Liquor store on Zeedijk, old place with cigars and all that.

I love that Abt 12. I tried a new Tripel called Karmeliet. Back on topic I second checking out the bars in the Spui area. I had great time hitting the bars here in 2000.

For drinks and rock music near the RLD, Rock Planet on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, open all day from about 10am to 3am. Loads of choice behind the bar of rock DVD's played loud through big TV's - can get requests. Only sell drinks but might still be smoker friendly, see what is going on when you go in. The later it gets the busier it gets.
2 minutes from the Dam, follow Damstraat (r/h corner of Dam Square /Nes) to first canal and turn right, about 3rd place down. Using the CS map Ricks and Ricks CS are next door and Greenhouse CS Centrum is opposite on the other side of the canal. Have a great time

I'll third, Ricks. Great bar. Wasted too many hours in their great upstairs window seats, watching (smoking and drinking) the days away.
A new discovery for me has been Winston on Warmoesstraat, Cheap drinks, nice outdoor area + large smoking/tooting room, always seems to be busy with friendly young crowd.

We spent a lot of our time in the Winston on our Sept trip.
Definitely a good find.

The Bulldog hotel bar around the corner is sound as well.
Reasonable drinks prices, you can smoke away, and the staff are friendly.

i really like the excalliber in the rld. Great bar with an upstairs and you can chill out on the bench outside with a beer and fat one. Mainly heavy rock music in this bar 24/7
