on a different vibe, In de Wildemaan (http://www.indewildeman.nl/indexe.html) is all about belgian brews. The place is hardcore. The vibe is all social, and about beer - and alot of old belgians yucking it up with special beer glasses.

The beer is just plain dumb good.

As well, t'arendsnest (http://www.arendsnest.nl/english.php) specializes in Dutch beer only, and has a completely zen space.

I highly recommend them both - with a caveat that they are a little uptight - they aren't places to twist off - if you know what I mean...

Recommend Nes cafe as well Bridget,if you've never been it's cheap, welcoming, free internet and you can blaze away, only 50 yards from Dam Square, music can be a mixed bag but usually a few rock ones in there,my favourite bar in Amsterdam.Enjoy your trip :)

excalibur great for rock/metal as is ??rock bar next to ricks?....excalibur seems a biker type place sponsored/run by the big red machine (amsterdam)....pretty sure that blue tube is a launch tube from a "milan" type anti-tank weapon system....i'm probably wrong as it's been years since i saw one and i'm to stoned to care or focus

well then i am a saddo too because i have a list in a spreadsheet which i update throughout the year with places recommended on the forum and then print before we go ... oh well

i have searched the messages so far and i don't see one of my favorites mentioned yet ... Eik en Linde

it is a so-called brown cafe in the east by the artis zoo and the hortus botanicus ... it is a locals place with a sweet cat roaming around ... the guy who makes the food has been there for the last few years that we have been visiting and everything we have tried so far has been lovely ... the amstel is lovely too, not strong, but very drinkable and a nice beer to accompany conversation ... it also has a pool table for the game called carambole ... opens at 11am

highly recommended if you are in the area ...

Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

someone who is a "sad person"

used, i think, in this context as someone who is a bit of a nerd or geek who goes to the trouble of being well organised and keeps information in a little book or spreadsheet
