iv been to osaka where okonomiyaki and tacoyaki shops are huge. never been in though. thanks for the reccomendation. i always crave japanese food when im in holland. even americanised japanese food like teriyaki. seems we travel to the same places. i was in bangkok and taipei this time last year. went to hk,naha, and vietnam too.titus wong wrote:Teppanyaki rocks. I've had it in Bangkok where they've expanded the concept to include Thai seasonings and ingredients as well as the theatrical elements of teppanyaki, i.e. flying knives and limbs. It was phenomenal. Japanese cuisine is cool in that it develops these little specialty restos like yakitori bars and ramen shops. I was in Taipei over xmas going to these izakayas every night where they specialize in small plates and beer. Very fun (as far as I can remember).
Back to the OP's thread (cuz I don't wanna hijack), have you ever tried Korean bbq? You can cook thinly sliced ribeye or short ribs tableside in a gas/charcoal brazier. Had I ever considered getting Korean bbq in Amsterdam, I might have some specific recommendations for you, but alas, I get enough of it in the states. Granted, it's a far cry from the traditional, western version but I thought the concept of cooking your own meat might appeal to you.
BTW, Cantona, if you like teppanyaki, you might want to try Japanese Pancake World in de Jordaan. Like teppanyaki, you can sit down at a grill/table where japanese pancakes, okonomiyaki, are prepared before your eyes. A dutch couple runs it. I've never been myself as I invariably find myself distracted by too much pot, but thought I'd mention it. Apparently, it's the only place of it's type in Western Europe.

EDIT - In posting the link, I just discovered that Japanese Pancake World is closed due to an injury to the chef. RATS! So never mind. Or file it away for later.

they like me more when i say linden b johnson is a moron. but yea as long as you have us dollars or even better gbp you will be a popular guy. its dirt cheap. the beggers are just very agressive. make sure if you take a tour or rickshaw ride or anything like that you agree on the price before hand and your good to go. im sure as americans we arent the most liked but from their point of view the french prob aren't very high either.Pauli Wallnuts wrote:how do the vietnamese treat americans? were you made to feel welcome?cantona7 wrote:i was in bangkok and taipei this time last year. went to hk,naha, and vietnam too.
if you like beach life, bargains, fake or factory b grade items then vietnam or hk are top destinations. a friend i met from canada via france picked up a ton of b grade ralph lauren polos for like $35. viet made marbs were $1 a pack and $10 a carton for those who add baccy to joints. havent been to hanoi. didn't like saigon much. but nha trang is stunning. also i bought a sick wodden opium pipe there. i dont smoke opium but it worked well with the ganj. bottom line though if your in that part of the world i reccomend bangkok or okinawa.
as far as feeling welcome i feel more welcome there than other parts of asia. i felt kinda unwelcome in south korea and vladivlostock. but extremely welcome in japan.

Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
Boner, don't slate it till you tried it, makes you ignorant, If I wanted to know how you like your steak or how you like to eat in a restaurant I would have started a thread on that, "how does boner like his steak" What i actually did was ask if anyone knows a steak on a stone restaurant in dam.. now the thread has spiraled out of control " how do vietnamese treat americans" WTF the thread is , STEAK ON A STONE MAN, STEAK ON A F****** STONE!!!!!! Can you guys not just PM each other instead of hijacking a thread that you have not even contributed to in the first place.

It's called an opinion which I'll stick by, a steak has to rest that is a fact, you want to pay good money to buy a part cooked steak and then finish it off yourself? carry on and enjoy your ruined steak, to answer your question - no I dont think theres a single place in Amsterdam that would ruin a steak for you.joossy wrote:Boner, don't slate it till you tried it, makes you ignorant, If I wanted to know how you like your steak or how you like to eat in a restaurant I would have started a thread on that, "how does boner like his steak" What i actually did was ask if anyone knows a steak on a stone restaurant in dam.. now the thread has spiraled out of control " how do vietnamese treat americans" WTF the thread is , STEAK ON A STONE MAN, STEAK ON A F****** STONE!!!!!! Boner, Boner, Boner......... you don't know what cooking on a stone is as you have never done it, if you have an opinion on it then it makes you an idiot, bone idol & ignorant. You can actually cook it yourself and let it rest, you don't have to throw it straight in your mouth.. Why you want to comment on something you know nothing about is dumb.
