Amsterdam has celebrated the completion of a ten-year project to renovate the Vondelpark.
The final act was the unveiling of the restored statue of 17th century Amsterdam writer and playwright Joost van den Vondel. The park's drainage has been improved and its paths raised and restored. The five cafes and restaurants have also been renovated, as have been its five bridges and its playgrounds.
The Vondelpark was created in 1865 and was declared a national monument in 1996. The Amsterdam council says that each year an estimated ten million people visit the park to take a walk, to jog or to have a picnic.
