May 11-17 - first timers to Amsterdam!! who is coming with?

Post by Newbie 2 dah Dubbie »

I didn't see any posting for these dates.

So it will be our first time in Amsterdam we are really looking forward to enjoying all ( almost all) the city has to offer. Been trying to read up on different things you can do - touristy stuff and things you can't do in the states!! I'm sure there is soooo much I don't even know about or couldn't even imagine.

We are looking to for ways to really "free our minds" and experience new things. Looking to meet some cool people to hang with locals and people from all over -- one thing I love about travel is learning about new cultures and people.

So if you are gonna be around the same time - lets chat :)

:D

Welcome to the forum.

You have been posted on the May Whos In Town page.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.
There are several others.
Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/profi ... le&u=43651

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

First timers get my S G Collins recommendation
I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.

How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.

Enjoy

I'll be in town 12-26 May. I'll set up a Tote & Talk for the 14th some where. Let me know what area of town you're staying in, I'm sure we can find a place conveniently close to us all. MikeD you'll be down in De Pijp area? I'll be staying up near Central Station.

i'll be in town from the 9th -14th for my 5th visit. i think i've managed to stumble on to most of the highlights of the great city. i would always recommend the van gogh museum, especially on friday evenings (they offer extended hours, a dj, and other exhibitions). that in itself can move the mind a little (though i will admit to using a little extra influence when available). i'm staying near the heineken museum and de pijp is my favorite neighborhood. drop me a line if you'd like to get together. i'll be solo, so would enjoy seeing you. have a good trip.

(i'm dumb...thought that was a march visit.)

We are staying a 5 min walk from Central Station - I think to the right of it if station is behind you - towards red light area and shopping street I think?

@ Jelly - great idea about the van gogh museam - maybe I'll actually get my husband to enjoy it this way :) thanks ! brave traveling solo but I guess if there was anyplace to go alone amsterdam would be good :) easy to make friends :)

@ mike d- your first visit too ?

@itscrashed - that sounds like fun! let me know when and where

Do you guys have any clothing suggestions for trip ? How big is rain a factor? will I look like a dork in a poncho? I've heard rain can be very bad - but wasn't sure if May would be an issue??

thanks - look forward to chatting with you all !

The weathers really great as a rule in May, you can always get a rain shower though, I dont think anyone worries what they look like especially when it's raining.

The 17th is my birthday and I know I wont be there this year so have a smoke for me then, cheers and enjoy.

@boner - well I sure will have one for you on the 17th :) thanks for info Just heard umbrellas don't work so well sometimes

I've heard the dress in amsterdam is a bit more laid back than in other parts of Europe - just wondering if as casual as in America?

Yeah umbrellas aren't really a good idea as the wind can pick up a bit, you'll find everyone just wears what they want in Amsterdam, it's all down to how laid back/tolerant they are.

This will be our second trip. Our first was last March. Three pieces of advice on clothing.
1) Bring comfy shoes, as you will walk plenty.
2) Baseball caps are one of the easiest ways to identify yourself as an outsider. Didn't see hardly anyone else wearing a cap while there.
3) Don't put too much thought into clothing. Nobody there cares whether you are wearing a poncho, designer fashion, or a hoodie. Wear what you're comfortable in and relax and have fun.

Whatever's clever. Sneakers are probably ideal due to the amount of walking you will be doing. Comfort above all else. You are gonna be smoking some of the best stuff in the world in a truly beautiful city. It would be a shame if you weren't enjoying yourself as well as you could just because you brought the wrong shoes.

Mike -

Where are you guys staying? we are around the train station. What is your favorite coffee shop? I've been reading some travel logs - taking notes of which ones are suggested and what types they have in each.
