I've had another idea about "The Book"...
With the thought lingering around of how long it will take to fill it and how many poeple will get to put thier name down in our little bit of ACD Forum history...
I've been thinking about what will happen to it when it is full.
Doog commented in another post that he thought I should have "The Book" to keep once it's full...
My Idea is that; Once "The Book" is full, I go to Amsterdam to collect "The Book" and I bring it home to read and show my friends and family... Lets say I have it for a few weeks or a month, maybe more...? When I'm finished with it I post it to the next member who signed it.; this would be Doog.
Doog then has "The Book" for as long as he wants and then he posts it on to the next member who signed it.... and so on.
When we get to the last person to have signed "The Book".... we decide on it's final resting place. Obviously I would really love to have "The Book" to own and keep BUT ONLY once it had ben filled by the ACD Forum members AND once it had been on a global journey which in itself could possibly take years...??
Also, there would be postage/packaging costs involved for each member to post it on.
Whats the general opinion out there...?

I definitely think that the book should have one final resting place when it's full. The posting round the world thing does sound like a lark (everyone could put little stickers on it from their home countries) but I wonder if the book would survive going to all the different countries without being damaged or lost in the post at some stage.
The only two possible choices we have for the book are at its current home (Nes-Cafe) or at the home of the brainchild of the book (Rez).
It's got to go to Rez.
If there was somebody out there who maybe wasn't gonna make it to Amsterdam for a while and wanted to sign the book then they could PM Rez with addresses and stuff.
I have seen photos of entries in THE BOOK (mine included - had a lump in my throat when i saw the pic) and so I think there should be more photos of the pages in THE BOOK that could then be posted on one of those photo hosting websites that y'all seem so keen on. That way, people who have signed the book can see new entries (and old ones).

I dunno. I don't think you should be allowed to sign the book unless you actually go to the Nes and physically sign it. It shouldn't be mailed to you to sign. Seems to me the point of the book is that people go out of their way when visiting the 'Dam to leave their sign. It's like a global rite of passage. As for it's finally resting home, I would say keep it at the NES. This way future visitors can read it and see its history in its pages. I gather, the first book can go to Rez... that is fitting. However, what about the second? Dig? Shrug. Either way, still making the trip to the Nes to sign it come the 21st.
50 characters? Nothing to say in 50 characters.
I can see the point about the possibilty of loss or damage on the global trip so I'm now not sure that it's such a good idea...
good packaging could prevent any serious damage but loss... it's worth too much to lose... a rethink is needed...
I had'nt even thought about "The Book - second edition"...
The final resting place... Maybe a poll is required...?

Never realised how strongly people actually felt about THE BOOK. I suppose the people who can't make it can have all the space they want on this forum to make their respective marks.Stygian23 wrote:I don't think you should be allowed to sign the book unless you actually go to the Nes and physically sign it. The current book should be the only book. It should be unique and maybe when it is full, then somebody could come up with another idea similar to THE BOOK but not in a book form so that people going to Amsterdam could say they were there.Stygian23 wrote:However, what about the second?
Well, think of it this way. The Book is a good idea, it gives members a physical connection with each other and symbollically links our trips. It's akin to kissing the Blarney Stone when going to Ireland, it's like going to Vatican City when in Rome, or walking around the Kaaba in Mecca when on Hajj.Doog wrote:Never realised how strongly people actually felt about THE BOOK. I dunno. I like the idea of 'Het Boek' too much to say limit it to one. For one thing, the forum is always growing and new members might like to leave their mark. For another, like I said above, it's a physical connection with each other and our seperate trips. A time capsule of sorts. I don't see why we can't keep up the tradition. Perhaps, if it gets to the point where the books are stacking up, we can then give the oldest books to those who have an interest in recieving one. For example, Rez would get the first one (of course), then say Lemming the next (since he is responsible for us all having a spot to congregate if somewhat virtually), then whomever (preferably in order of seniority [meaning length of time they have been a member of the forums] so as to keep it fair). Shrug. Not to say we can't come up with other things akin to the book. Perhaps one of them could be something we trade through the post.Doog wrote:The current book should be the only book. The book should forever stay at 't Nes.
A second and further editions will obviouslly be needed at some point but what is the point of taking the original out of it's "resting" place / home.
Wouldn't it be nice for other signers to read the original?
The book and all of our subsquent left over paraphanellia should be left at Nes Cafe from now on.
Just my opinion...

You've definitely got a point there. Already a bit of interest in this topic.Rezin_8_ed wrote:The final resting place... Maybe a poll is required...?
My personal opinion is this.
Finished book goes to Rez
Rez photographs book pages and posts them on the net so that anyone else can see who's written what any time, any place
Rez keeps book.
It will probably be a while before the current book is finished, I can't really imagine too many of the pages being full at the moment (and there are plenty of pages to be filled).
Perhaps there could be a second book but something different would be good as well.
Obviously people leaving their unwanted smoking materials is entirely up to them and those should definitely stay at Nes.
Hi all,
with obvious mixed views I'm going to let this run for a while before setting up a poll for "The Book's" final resting place.I can however see both points and want whats hopefully going to be a majority vote.
After all, it's our book, just my idea...
Keep all those good ideas and suggestions coming... Like Doog said, it has many pages so, it might be a while before it's full...?
I do like the idea of other keepsakes going to other members, but we could be talking about a long period of time...
Lets see how this thread developes over the next few days/weeks...

First the idea of "The Book" is brilliant. Hat's off.
It's a record of how Amsterdam and Nes have made an impression on our lives and the lives of those that share our interest.
I say it should stay at nes and Rez can scan it when its full.
I plan on signing it in three weeks and taking a photo then.
Probably make it my avatar.

Pack the pipe and keep it movin' down the line
i hope i make it back over to mark the first edition of "the book".....i have a feeling it will take some time to fill up, there are only some many of us on this forum......i guess we'll find out.
I kinda like the idea of "the book" making a journey around the world, but the risks of what could happen might outweigh the coolness of a successful journey. Whatever happens there are obviously only to choice for a final resting place for "the book" .... NES cafe OR REZ's bookshelf ......only time will tell.

Great point 'Dog. Only so many of us on the forum and even less of those who actually post on a regular basis and even less who actually go to Amsterdam on a reular basis too, so you would guess it would be these people who were going over to sign THE BOOK so after a while it's gonna be repeating itself to a certain extent.mazdog wrote:i hope i make it back over to mark the first edition of "the book".....i have a feeling it will take some time to fill up, there are only some many of us on this forum......i guess we'll find out.
Which is why I suggested that there should only be one book and that it should be sent chez rez after completion and that a new idea should be launched afterwards.

Wow, now that's concise and to the point, the Hemp Museum ehhsonicblue wrote:I'll add my opinion.
Either the book stays at the Nes or offered to the Hemp Museum in Amsterdam as an artifact of Amsterdam's history of tolerance and the Netherlands global influence and support of individual rights and freedom.
Old School and Proud of It.
