Folks - you might want to check with your airlines if you're heading out over the next day or so...
Due to the Volcanic activity in Iceland, much of the UK flight network has been cancelled!
This morning, ALL KLM and BMIBaby flights to Amsterdam have been cancelled... Just checking Birmingham International's website and everything up til midday has already been cancelled.
Sorry to be the bearer of potential bad news, but get checking if you're due to go today or tomorrow folks...
I hope this is all over by next week. I'm in Amsterdam next weekend (fingers crossed).
My sympathies to anybody due to fly to The Netherlands from the UK or Ireland today.
I'm due to fly out of heathrow early sunday but if its no change by Saturday then my plan B will be to drive using the eurotunnel. So if that is the case I will have some spare seatage from the London area.
I trid to book the ferry from Newcastle tonight, but they won't accept my Visa Electron card I would have had to drive down to Newcastle, and the guy on the phone reckoned they would have been fully booked by the time I got there.
This is absolutely fucking gutting, I can't believe this. Of all the things that could happen, it had to be a fuckin volcanic eruption in ICELAND!!!!
Depends on a few factors. How long the eruption lasts and the wind direction being the most important. It could go on for a couple of days or a couple of weeks. There's just no way of knowing at this early point.
What is certain is that there will definitely be no flights whilst the dust cloud is hanging over Northern Europe. Any plane flying through the cloud could be stripped bare. It's like flying through sandpaper at such high speeds.
The UK Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) have said that the flight ban over England will be in operation for "the forseeable future" and it's now unlikely that the ban will be lifted by 6pm this evening as previously stated. Also, The Netherlands has apparently closed its whole airspace down. Bad news.
*edit: I've just heard that most UK airlines are in the process of cancelling all tomorrow's flights as well. I would imagine that all flights into or out of other north-west European countries will be cancelled too.
Where have you heard tomorrow flights will be cancelled too saxon? They haven't said anything about that on sky or bbc news and those are pretty up to date.
They are going to review the situation tonight at 6. Hopefully what will happen is todays flights will just be cancelled and tomorrows will run probably with delays.
Somebody on another forum that I'm a member of, is a Virgin employee and passed on the news.
I can't provide a link I'm afraid as it's not *official* news.
