Strippen kart gets a reprieve in Amsterdam
Strippen kart gets a reprieve in Amsterdam
f you still have a Nationale Strippen Kaart, don’t throw it away just yet. It seems that the complete changeover to the OV-chipkaart 'swipecard' system is not yet a done deal.
According to Petra Faber, spokesperson for the GVB, the assumed deadline of 15 April for the changeover has been postponed. The matter was never officially adopted, said officials at the GVB. The transport ministry is set to take up the issue again on 19 April.
If officials decide in favour of the OV-chipkaart only for public transport in Amsterdam, riders could have until 3 June to continue using the Strippen Kaart.
If the matter remains unresolved, riders should anticipate things to continue as usual until further notice from the GVB.
For now, the GVB is advising all riders to get the OV-chipkaart and make the switch now from the Strippen Kaart. They say there are some clear advantages, including cost savings in certain cases.

Not all the places that used to sell them, sell them anymore as well. I went to a couple of different shops until I found one that still carried them. Thought I may need another and bought one, but never used it... keep me posted, Marco.

when my strippenkaart ran out on my last trip i boarded a tram without a ticket and had to buy a single journey public transport chip card for e2.60 which gave me an hour's travel ... the strippenkaart was cheapercantona7 wrote:can tourists still get these swipecards or do we have to pay in cash?
to get the equivalent discount with the new chip card i think you have to buy tickets for a certain time period like a day or 2 days
I bought an anonymous OV Chipkaart at the GVB building outside Centraal Station with absolutely no hassle whatsoever. To anyone thinking of buying those IAmsterdam 24/48 hour etc passes, DO NOT DO IT. It's a complete rip off, especially when the chipkaart itself is so reasonable and can be used on your other trips for the next 5 years.cantona7 wrote:can tourists still get these swipecards or do we have to pay in cash?
The card itself is €7.50, and an additional €5 is already loaded onto the card, so expect to actually pay €12.50 (and it's a good idea to top it up by another €10 or €20 while you're buying it. It saves the hassle of topping it up by credit card in an Albert Heijn or looking for a cash top up station in the Metro).
I think the old strippenkaarts might actually have worked out as cheaper per trip (esp. if you plan on transferring a lot) but the chipkaart is so convenient I didn't carey.
Only warning: don't forget to check out when you're leaving the bus/tram, or they'll charge you €4.60 for making an honest mistake! Wankers.

help, im confused...for the two of us, can I use one chip card for two people (swipe it twice) or do i have to get two, cos if we need two that means 30 euros just to get to be able to use the trams at all, all this seems liks a bit of a stoners nightmare, first time ive ever regarded a unlimited travel london tube/train/bus travelcard at £5.60 for one day as cheap!

Yes you need 2 cards, but they are 7.50 each so its 15 not 30.templeball wrote:help, im confused...for the two of us, can I use one chip card for two people (swipe it twice) or do i have to get two, cos if we need two that means 30 euros just to get to be able to use the trams at all, all this seems liks a bit of a stoners nightmare, first time ive ever regarded a unlimited travel london tube/train/bus travelcard at £5.60 for one day as cheap!

thanks, but i thought they need a minimum additional top up of 5 euros per card, which along with my exaggerations gets me to 30! (or 25 in the real world, not that I shall be in the real world long once i get there) - its a hell of an expensive way to get a few bloody trams over a few days.Marco wrote:Yes you need 2 cards, but they are 7.50 each so its 15 not 30.templeball wrote:help, im confused...for the two of us, can I use one chip card for two people (swipe it twice) or do i have to get two, cos if we need two that means 30 euros just to get to be able to use the trams at all, all this seems liks a bit of a stoners nightmare, first time ive ever regarded a unlimited travel london tube/train/bus travelcard at £5.60 for one day as cheap!
Might it be better for us to just pay on the tram for a one day card, is that possible?

If you are not taking it often sure...2.20 for one hour. 4.40 for two.templeball wrote:thanks, but i thought they need a minimum additional top up of 5 euros per card, which along with my exaggerations gets me to 30!
