You are right in that the clip is spot on in everything it says. Let's face it, the only people who take mental health seriously are those who suffer from it or those who care for people who suffer from it.
Some people possibly might find it offensive to have mental health issues thrown at them in such an offhand way.
However, those people may not be members of this forum, and if they are then they may choose not to comment as I have done.
I laughed at the clip when my mum e-mailed it to me and I also thought for a long time about posting it...
For those that did'nt like the clip, I hope no offence was taken... Sincerely, no offence was intended.
That's the thing about this place, we are all so PC and polite/considerate that we can comfortably speak both positively and negativley without arguing.
I just feel that it is representative of the general feeling that people have towards ill mental health and how it's such a great laugh for those more fortunate to rub the faces of those less fortunate right into the shit.
Doog, it's hardly rubbing somebodies face in it if you gave them the free choice to click on the link or not. Beware of politicial correctness mate, otherwise things like yer Michael Barrymore joke could be mis interpreted as gay bashing.
I'm only saying that the view of mental health as shown in the clip is shared by a lot of the general public who obviously fail to appreciate what a serious problem it is.
Maybe the clip is intended to provoke the same sort of reaction as my own. Maybe it's sort of educational in a back handed sort of way.
Being gay is not a problem, but again there are certain members of the public who believe in Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve and so gays, like psychiatric cases, will always be in a minority and looked down on as a result because their behaviour does not conform to the status quo.
I do not believe that my Michael Barrymore joke is gay bashing in any way. It refers to an alleged incident involving him and also gives reference to a similarly named British comedy show which is now no longer broadcast.
I do admit that it is in poor taste and that I just about doubled up laughing when I heard it.
Well ya see, there's the thing about humour.....it's a matter of opinion. But going by your standards we're to stay clear of a Scotsman an Englishman and an Irishman, priests, rabbis, vickers, religion on a whole, blondes, women drivers, gynecologists, skin tone, sexual prefference or those afflicted with....erm...anything. Unless, you doubled up when ya heard it?. This is why ya need to be very careful about setting the bar at what's funny and what isn't mate, as it doesn't take much to find yerself throwing stones inside a glass house. Not to mention, Mental illness is what it says it is....an illness, which is why their behaviour doesn't conform to the status quo. Somehow, I don't think gay people would say the same about themselves. Now, while 'eventually' the first will be genetically cured out of the human race ...the second are havin a ball fighting every inche of the way for their own equality....in the meantime, not giving a shit about who's lookin down at them anyway. Plus, I think you need to give everybody the benefit of the doubt as to what level of humour they have....cos whether yer mentally ill, gay straight, black, Irish, black and irish, black and irish and have white hair....or just a gynecologist. There's a rule that covers us all 'If ya can't laugh at yerself, then who can ya laugh at?'. I didn't actually open the clip until I read your response mainly because common sense told me what type of thing it was before I even heard it. I found the clip to be what I think is was intended as....mildly humours, but then I also totally appreciate what a serious problem mental health is. Which is my point, ignorance of mental health issues is not the same as a failure to appreciate the seriousness of them and I think you'll find the 'general' public suffer more from the first of those than the second....but, having a sense of humour about it still doesn't guarantee either.
I try to look at life with a positive perspective. Humor is a good thing - a human thing.
As far as those who have mental illnesses, my opinion is when they can laugh at themselves like "healthy" people do then they are on the road to a happier life. If we treat people as different then they will feel different. If we treat the ill like they were healthy then perhaps they will begin to feel just like regular folks. Just my thoughts on this I am no doctor.

Okay, I tried to avoid this but there's no point now. My ex-girlfriend ended up in a hospital because her stepdad was sexually abusing her and not one person would believe her when she tried to speak about it.
She's still there, abandoned by her family who think it was some sort of way at getting back at her mother for divorcing her biological dad.
That's why I made such an issue about the mental health thing. If it had happened to you then you wouldn't have thought it was funny either but that's another thing about humour. It's funny because it isn't happening to you or you're not affected by it.
But oh no, you all come back going through every single thing i say with a fine toothed comb like I don't have a fucking clue what I'm talking about. Well maybe I don't when it comes to your precious coffeeshops and your hash or weed or vaporisers or whatever but that doesnt mean that I don't know about anything else.
Why don't all you know it all bastards take your combs through that one?
hehe this is a controversial thread...I find it hard to belive that no one listened to her, especially in today's "definate yes" society...
That's regardless though, I have family member's who died of cancer, I don't give a toss if someone makes a cancer joke, because it's not like its affecting them now/when they were alive.
If you are offended by a post or link then don't reply, it's just asking for arguments where you get more stressed than before, this is all going a bit out of control.
Everything (near as damnit) is offensive to someone, somewhere, take it with a pinch of salt and don't stress.
P.S My view on mental health maybe slightly tainted as about 3 people I know with "Chronic scizophrenia" are really just lazy cunt's who don't want to work but still want £15k+ a year in handouts...
The difference between you and me Doog, I keep my private life....private. Which is why you have no idea about my experience with mental health issues and with those who suffer from them. Suffices to say though, it runs a tad deeper than an ex girlfriend. (This is the space where, if I was to use a 'comb' ...you'd be bald by the time I was finished, honesty sometimes can be a brutal tool. But I'll not bother) Y'know another difference between you and me, mate. I prefer to makesure my brain's in gear before I try driving my mouth.
