Precisely stated.

I liken some of the advice (?) given on this thread to advice that was given to an admitted newby a few months back: The only thing to know about Amsterdam, C/S's, and marijuana is puff, puff, pass. Now if that isn't the most thoughtful and insightful advice I have ever read? (total sarcasm).

The best we can do is not to respond directly to those who have a "fuck all" attitude, and instead provide some sound, intelligent (relative), and mature (also relative) advice.

I am still somewhat baffled by people's insistence that they break their cannabis cherry by coming to Amsterdam. IMO, there is no better place than the comfort of ones home to get high/stoned for the first time. Even better when it's with a friend, as opposed to being alone in a major, global city like Amsterdam.

If you can't do it at home, then maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. Too many times I have read where people stated that their parents/roommate(s) would be pissed or throw them out or call the cops. My response is - WTF, you still living with your parents? As for the roommate(s), why would you have such roommates in the first place?

I don't drink as such, maybe the odd cider or Apelkorn here and there but that's mainly just cos I'm somewhere I can't smoke. I believe that if ya fill yer life with enough interesting shit you wont feel any need for alcohol, MJ or any other 'Drug'. It's an intergral part of my life now at 38, but if I went back to being 19 with 20/20 foresight, I wouldn't have started meself. Sure, it's fun and all that, but imo it mainly serves as a distraction.

You know what man that's what my Miss's says, she's went T-Total a while back. To be straight with you, i'm not a massive fan of consious altering drugs, that's why i smoke as apposed to drink ( well that much, i still have the odd sess, but some sporting/family/important events mainly ) 'cos i find i don't enjoy it as much as i used to. This however is prone to change most likely. But i think you make a good point man.

Reckon you'll ever kick it all?

Completely with you DC.
I do not drink at all, had all of about 8 beers in the last 12 years total.
As for weed, its taken me far too many years to realise i do not need it.
About 4 years back i decided to quit altogether and took 2 years off.
Then decided i could "handle" the odd smoke and it would be an enjoyable once in a while thing instead of a habbitual every evening thing.
Now i smoke 1 night a month or so, and it works well with my lifestyle.
Obviously the exception being these once a year or so Amsterdam trips
To each there own though.

Haha, this thread spiralled into argument fairly quickly.

no fear about scaring me off, I'm looking forward it too much.

Don't plan on smoking the strongest joint on the menu and end up whiteying, thanks anyway for that one.

I'm staying in a backpacker hostel, so I'm sure I'll be able to meet some international folk who are keen for a first time coffeshop run with me.

Looks like a vaporizer and chatting to the budtender is the way to go - thanks guys! :)

Again, be there August 31st - Spetember 5th if any of you are in town!

If I ever manage to quit smoking tobacco first, yes.

I'm doing a tour around Europe over July-September and I'm in Amsterdam for five days. While I want to see some of the sights, I'm more interested clearly in the coffeshop culture.

I've only smoked weed once before, and that was a badly rolled, very weak joint (while I was drinking) almost two years ago. I don't remember it doing too much to be honest, it was shoddy quality, so we can fairly say that I'm a complete newbie to pot.

what do you recommend for a first timer? i dont want to get hit too heavy and i don't really know much about the different types, though reading around the board it sounds like I should go for a vaporizer and something pretty mellow that the vets on here avoid.

also, i'm travelling alone - but of course i'll meet people on this tour, no problem. and i'm of pretty small stature, 19 year old female, if that affects your reaction or anything.
maybe i should wait until i come back to the Dam, with a trusted friend or someone who knows more about it?

haha.
cheers for the advice :)
Just watch yourself in Amsterdam and in Europe. A young woman like you could easily find yourself in trouble if smoking too strong a weed.

I would start by not blasting your photo for everyone to see, but that's just me :?

Which hostel? I went to the Flying Pig and that did me right. It was nice to have a smoking room that I could hang out in for quite some time.

And in regards to having a whitey and/or smoking too much(and a bunch of other stuff thrown in for good measure).

Most of the weed you can get is not what you'd call "subtle". It doesn't "sneak up on you". There is no "I had no idea what I was getting myself into". If you take one or two puffs, then wait about two minutes or so, you will have no doubt in your mind if you have had enough(the answer will most likely be "Yes", btw and that is ok). Make sure that you remember to eat(and there are MANY wonderful places for food in Amsterdam), try to spend at least one day sober to do tourisy things(this includes going to a cafe)

Be honest with yourself and with the person who works behind the counter at the coffeeshop. They do have a weed that will work just fine for you. Don't worry about trying to sound cool with sativa and indica(as you might confuse the two when you get high). Feel free to be(briefly) descriptive. I myself told budtenders that I wanted medium grade "can't find my keys weed" as opposed to "melt into the couch weed" or "OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE weed". They knew exactly what I meant and I got weed that was exactly what I wanted.

Everything I just said only applies to smoking or using a vaporizer. If you hear about "truffles", that is an entirely different game(that you should think about very seriously before you give it a shot). Also, if you get a space cake or something, that can sneak up on you(but even then it isn't that terrible and it isn't that hard to be ok).

If you are able, try to go to the Grey Area and Basjoes. The Grey Area is tiny but has some really really good weed(people here rave about it all the time). If you go to Basjoes and the bud tender is a black guy with HUGE dreadlocs, his name is James. James is your friend.

On your way to Basjoes you will most likely have to go straight through the Red Light District. There is a small chance that(like me) the sounds of sixty billion sex workers tapping on windows will bother you a little(ok, in my case it bothered me a lot, it was like that old movie "The Birds") and you might want to turn back. Don't. Basjoes is totally worth it.

Make sure to get at least one chocomel if you like chocolate.

If you are the type of person to "watch what you eat", Amsterdam is most likely one of the worst places to do that EVER.

Make sure to stop by the Buddhist temple and get one of those little yellow things. If the one you get is anything like the one I got, you'll be thinking about it for a very long time.

I'm sure there's more stuff that more level headed and experienced minds will add, but that's about it for me.
