good news on the worms ... you must be doing something right ... for the worms your garden is not habitat-loss but habitat-gain so win win for you and the worms

i think you have taken a cracking photograph ...

Image

and i have been enjoying looking at your photo next to a drawing entitled "Basic Morphology of the Female Wasp" in the wikipedia article below ... very cool

Twichaldinho wrote:Since my last update, I have have basically worked in some fish, blood and bone into the soil
yep ... fertilize, fertilize, fertilize
Twichaldinho wrote:... plus any deadheaded flowers
i would recommend composting these first before digging them in, as they rot they could affect the roots of your growing plants ... in a compost bin or pile or tumbler you can let them rot really well along with most of your other garden waste and then when it all has turned into a fresh-smelling crumbly material you can dig that in
Twichaldinho wrote:... and enjoyed the full colour chart
well you did say at the beginning that you sowed a million seeds and that they all came up ...

since you are enjoying all the colour so much there is something to think about for the future ... namely, winter colour ... as the summer colours disappear it would be nice for your winter garden to come into play ... there are some plants which become very colorful in the winter and with dazzling displays of form and vegetation, in the summer they are mostly non-descript and just form part of the background, but in winter they will provide as much delight as your summer display ... having a winter garden as well as a summer one would give you a colour-feast twice a year ... and that would be twice as good

here is the winter garden from the botanic gardens in cambridge england which i have seen ... i was instantly smitten with the idea ... and it is on my list of gardens to make sometime soon

Twichaldinho, Nice display you look to have there, I bet you are chuffed to little mint balls
It’s so satisfying when it all comes together
& T’worms as stonedsince’67 said you must be doing something right, the gardeners friend they are
(Apart from leaving worm casts all over my lawn when it’s too wet to brush them off before cutting it, LOL)

Stonedsince’67, arh winter colour that is on my to do list I will probably just have a bit more green than last year

But as you probably know a garden is never finished

Well for the last couple of weeks about the most I have been doing in my garden has being trying to get the grass cut between downpours
As well as constantly having to adjust the mowers blade to try to get an even cut
(even resorting to using a file on the blades)
I think I managed to bend one on the cylinder when I was making a start on attempting to resurrect my mum & dads lawn
(Mum managed to burn huge bare streaks on it with feed & weed, bless her)
I have been collecting seeds as well with ones from the double poppies for man & beast

Image

My mate down the yard (who's outside tap I use for the hose pipe), His wife's dad has been dumping plants on them like mad this year
with tomatoes that are of triffid proportions
To Just handing her 2 strawberry plants and saying oh their about read for potting on
Knowing she doesn't have any pots never mind compost
So I banged them in a tub for them & peg 3 of the runners down in to smaller pots & left them for 2 weeks
Last week I cut them from the original plants and then pegged some of the runners in to more pots
Looks like it will be 15 plants from them

Image

I will probably give most of them away same goes for the seeds, but that's one of the bits of gardening I enjoy most

and here are a few of the plants I have waiting to go in / work out where to put
Oregano, 3 each of 3 different pinks, lavender that I got going convinced I would need to fill gaps in the ones I did last year
and some garlic that I have started far to early, but what the hell

Image

Image

So with the poppies in next doors bit being well past it and having more seeds from them than you could shake a stick at I stared to clear them last week
Got about 1/3 done
Yesterday morning I was up at silly o'clock but after reading StonedSince'67 latest update with a coffee and smoke
I was determined to get some more done
and was out ripping poppies up before 06:30
About another 1/3 of the poppies ripped up and then a bit of a hoeing over trying to avoid the foxgloves & ladies mantel that was under the poppies
It has given some light to the nasturtiums that came up where I dumped a load of bad clay like soil from mine in march and doesn't look to empty
To my shame I am not composting the poppies mainly due to lack of space and a mate has offered to get rid of anything I want to
But once I had, had my play in next doors bit I had to do a shuffle with my compost, take a load out of the bottom of the bin small amount of that fed back in on the top
then take some of the dryer from the over spill heap and add that to the bin, then the rest that came from the bottom of the bin was mixed in to the heap
giving me room for stuff out of my garden
The lettuces I had planted had got seriously out of hand so they came out, but I have had a good amount off them, then it was more or less just cutting a few things back to give room to others
pulling any weeds I could see/get to as well as lifting a few geraniums and campanulas that had popped up
If they survive I will probably stick them in next doors bit

so here are a few photos of yesterday just before I had a bloody good soak
they were taken about 13:30 ish and the shadow from the house on the lawn tells me the year is marching on
the only thing I did after these was cut all the flowers from all the pinks for the house, then gave it all a good soaking once the sun was off it
as even after the relatively wet couple of weeks here when I lifted the lettuces I noticed that as an old manager of mine (when I was still allowed to play with the big hammers & spanners) would have put it
"It was as dry as a nuns"

things are looking good and it sounds like you are also very productive in bringing things on

this is my favorite photo, having a wall to work with is good and a corner even better ...

Image

yes the light has changed, both in the timings as well as the direction, and the plants are responding by playing their endgame ... but you look like you are well on top of things at the moment, thanks for the report and pics

Cheers :D
I wouldn't necessarily say productive, it's more a case of I just really enjoy growing things from scratch or there about
I could have bought most of the plants last year & got an instant hit (also in the pocket)
But it would be nowhere near as good as looking at the lavender or aubrietia and thinking I grew that from seed
I did buy the pinks last year & a few this year but taking cuttings is relatively easy
and when some of them had this on the label
Image
well you just have to don't you
StonedSince'67 wrote:this is my favorite photo, having a wall to work with is good and a corner even better ...
most of that has happened on it's own
I put the 2 sweet peas in there as they had to go somewhere
as I said the nasturtiums are from seed that was in the heavy clay that I dumped behind the tree stump
the plan with the bit in front of next door is to try to get it to look half decent with as little effort as poss
I didn't even dig it over at the beginning of this year
But lots of stuff that sets seed like mad seems to be working at the mo
another that I spotted yesterday that has come from seed in the ground was this

I am also fairly sure these are
Forget-me-not's of one sort or another, but could be very wrong

Oh yes
this is the google earth shot of my house (allegedly 30/05/09)

Image

It is orientated with north at the top
and I am just about at the bottom of one of the small valleys round here
Direction doesn't seem to change that much it's more a case of as the sun gets lower in the sky it takes longer to get round the back & stays for a lot less time
if you know what I mean

Just been looking through this thread, some lovely snaps lads. Don't have a garden meself, just a balcony with a few herbs and stuff, but i thought you might like these pics from last week. A little trip round the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, a great place for a stoned stroll.

Update Time again me thinks
Since the last one I got the last of the poppies in next doors bit ripped out
then moved and split some Montbretia from mine to against the wall as well as some of the suspected forget-me-nots
I also had a few small bits of the pink geranium in pots and one of the campanula so they have gone in next door as well

Here’s the view from my kitchen sink on 27/08

Image

And from the doorstep
Image

The next job in mine was to start clearing the annuals from between the 2 flags and the small wall & then the border to the right of the lawn
Again I have been taking advantage of the neighbors offer to get rid of any garden waste
After clearing both lots I swept up the huge amount of cornflower and nasturtium seeds that were on the flags/bricks
and then spread liberally on next doors

These photos are from 11/09, I had just got the border to the right of the lawn cleared of the tall stuff & had just left the nasturtiums there for the time being
And the lavender had been given a cut back again

I had been trying to get as much done as I could as I always had this week booked off work to try to do some bits in the garden
(It being the equinox tomorrow and all that)
So getting in front has given me the break I needed as it has been just a tad damp so far most of the week
Got more or less the main jobs on my to do list done and am just waiting for it all to dry out a bit more before I do some more cutting back
Will take some more photos in the next couple of days

quite right, summer is over, it is now autumn, my how time flies

it sounds good to have a week off to devote to the garden and get ready for winter ... that is my goal in the next month or so too, be ready for winter

that all depends on how ready the soil is for planting straight away
Cisco wrote:Going over on Sunday to turn it over so shall get some pics up to show my plot
you will get an idea of what has to be done next when you first take fork to ground, would love to see pictures of the plot and close-ups of the ground

best of luck with the gardening ...
