Getting on the Bus with Luggage?

Post by abcdabcd »

When I arrive to Schiphol I have to get to Zandvoort with a carry-on luggage, will this be an issue on the bus? Or else I'm thinking of hiring a driver to take me there. I'm assuming that most people getting picked up from Schiphol would have luggage with them on the bus but, I don't know how the buses there are, is there going to be enough room with me and my luggage (carry-on) etc..?

I figured since it would be my first time there and having luggage with me maybe I shouldn't try to figure out the public transportation / bus system immediately. I could do that once I get settled in, and get a driver instead, what do you think?

a driver could be expensive

there should be a regular train which will take you to zandvoort, you may have to change at haarlem

transportation services in the netherlands are very good, usually very punctual and the information needed to make travel plans is available in english on the websites

for example, checking http://www.ns.nl/ produces the following -

taking luggage on the train is not a problem, the journey is not long, the views out of the windows will be interesting and the ticket is not expensive

have a great trip

Take the train cheap and simple.
A driver will cost you around 40 €...

Thanks for the info. I had to change my plans so instead of going to Zandvoort, I'm going to Leiden. I checked on ns.nl and I can take the train from Schiphol to Leiden Centraal and then I have to take the bus from there to the hotel which is 6 min.

So, that should be ok if I have to take the bus for a few minutes? I'm going to have a 22" carry-on roller and a laptop bag.

Also, how do you qualify for the discounted fare they have listed? and what's the difference between 1st class and 2nd class?

first class has slightly nicer carriage/seats

discount is presumably for students and pensioners.

people on public transport carry luggage, especially to and from airports or hotels, do not worry so much. ;)

Make sure you dont pay for 1st class, 2nd class is great - you'll be fine with your luggage on the bus as well.

Does anybody know around which area at Schiphol I could pick up an OV-chipcard? Once I get this, I can preload funds on there and pay for the trip (train and bus) then once I get to the hotel check-in etc. If I want to go back out and need to take public transportation I can just use the same card, correct? Sounds like the transition to OV-chipcard is in most regions now?
