Neighbourhoods to check out for living in Amsterdam & be

Post by dreama »

Hi guys

I am visiting the Dam for the upteenth time this coming weekend for four days and want to cut into the stoner time a little to investigate some areas for our move.

We generally sleep in centrum and stumble around the city in awe of the buildings and atmosphere.

For this trip we want to have a decent look around some key areas to establish the best suited place to us. All being well my BF will be working in Centrum and I will be right by CS.

Our income (planned) is approx 4500 euros per month, of which around 2000 can go on the apartment plus utilities. The accomodation will ideally be a 1 bed apartment in a nice looking traditional buiding as opposed to a large apartment block.

We love the canals, parks, relaxed bars and markets. The main priority is somewhere safe, but not "posh". We like to be able to
cycle home at night and not feel intimidated. We want to be a maximum
of 30 mins away from work (either bike or tram) and still have the feel of Amsterdam without the noise on our doorstep.

Does the above ring alarms for any particular areas? We are planning
to take a good look around oud zuid, jordaan, de pijp and also the quieter areas of centrum.

Any advice really appreciated. We are two adults in our late twenties with two cats and a very keen stoner habit! X

1 bedroom apt for 2 grand a month, you'll 'pretty much' be able to go anywhere and just pick which one you like.

Mind you, possibly up to 8000 before you get the key.

You certainly do not need to spend 2 grand.....

I live in the Westerpark and love it...really a neighborhood, very Dutch (ethnically mixed).

yeah, Westerpark is good... also check out De Pijp, Jordaan etc.

Go for areas at the edge of the Centrum, or slightly outside it. Its cheaper, a little more quiet at nighttime, better shops/cafes/restaurants, less tourists, just better in general.

There are dodgy areas too of course, its a bit of a patchwork so you just gotta have a look around your potential living address. If there are groups of men just standing around on the street, bad sign.

Great advice guys thanks! Really like the westerpark area so will focus on exloring more during this trip. What are the odds f finding a smoke friendly apartment? Also what's the situation with cats? As it is a very dense area I notice there's a lot of cats around, is it pretty safe for them on the street?

Thanks x
