FIFA WORLD CUP 2006
Going to start this off so we can all come on and have a rant about the games played during the World Cup and the media hype that surrounds the tournament also.
As a fair dinkum Australian, I have to be realistic and hope that we can get past the group stage (Brazil will surely finish first although probably not as easily as most people think they will.
I think our physical style will be enough to get a result against Japan (who tend to shy away from all the rough and tumble), Croatia are nowhere near the side they once were but you never know sometimes.
Top two Brazil then Australia and Guus Hiddink is the man to take us there after what he achieved in 2002 with South Korea (even though the tournament was partly held in their own back yard)
We recently came away with a draw against Netherlands (in which two Netherlands players picked up injuries that could seriously threaten their appearances at the World Cup (Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van Der Vaart) although the regular Dutch guy in the street will tell you that those two are over-rated.
I like our "World Cup song" which is Down Under by Men At Work which was originally released in 1981. Taken from the album "Business As Usual" which I used to own on cassette but has since been thrown out due to lack of cassette player and abundance of PC with broadband connection and I-Tunes.
Only England song I remotely like is a remixed version of Hurry Up Harry by Sham 69 where the line "we're goin down the pub" is replaced by "we're gonna win the cup"
I liked the original version and I must say that it's the only version I'll get to hear "north of the border".

Okay World Cup fever hasn't exactly taken hold yet as the tournament has only just started and not one of our countries has played yet.
Here's a little link to get things going

Hey Doog, this is where we are complete opposites mate. Even though, for three years I managed my step-son's team from under 10's - under 12's I really don't have an interest in football. If there is a big match on with enemy teams... i dunno, arsenal v man u or that kinda thing... i'll watch it in the hope we'll see some rough and tumble... these days it only seems to be either how many "skills" one can do OR how dramatically one can "go down" at the slightest or sometimes even non-excistant "contact"... I wanna see some big strong lump of a geeza striding through anybody thats got the bollocks to take him on... I do like to see Rooney on a run. I like Henry with his ability, speed and acuracy. I respect him for his skill, agility and grace with a ball under control, however I've been in his way in traffic before and he left my with a sour taste of pungent twat in my mouth.
I don't know enough to comment any more and my comments are just my opinion through my eyes, wrong I may be but who cares... I'm too relaxed and can't believe I wrote all that ? /\

I want to preface this by saying I have never been a soccer{football}fan, but since becoming a member of this site I have seen the light{due to most members being of european descent}and I want to give my full and massive support for the U.S effort
Playing the czech's will be tough but I believe we have a handle on GHANA and ITALY
GOOD LUCK TO ALL NATIONS

I'm hoping that Poland will now beat Germany so that there is still a chance for Germany to finish second in their group.Boner wrote:A win against Trinidad & Tobago and we win the group
England will most likely take the three points from T&T and win the group which means they would play Germany in the second round if the Germans finished second.
I think that's the game every Englishman and German wants to see. Let's face it, one of these teams aren't going to reach the final and it's always good to have an England/Germany match somewhere along the line.
I picked Germany to win the World Cup. Nuff said.

Australia 3 Japan 1
Game of the tournament so far (didn't see Germany v Costa Rica)
Great start for our boys although Schwarzer made of mess of the goal that gave Japan the early lead. We huffed and puffed and I would have been happy if the game had finished 1-1.
Tim Cahill is a legend and John Aloisi scored the decisive penalty in the shoot-out against Uruguay that earned qulification for the tournament.
All in all I'm getting a bit emotional AND I actually have my first bit of smoke from round here for many a month.
Hey it's only soapbar. Yeah and football is only a game.

The commentators after the game were saying that the referee was only being fair to Australia for not allowing the penalty after he had allowed Japan's goal.
The heart was in the mouth at the moment.
Everybody seems to think Schwarzer was fouled but he got himself into a mess that he couldn't get out of. No fouls
Australia has always had the physical side to their game as compensation for the lack of skill. A hard working team of hard nuts.
I've seen Lucas Neill put in some real shockers during his time in England and I saw Kevin Muscat a few times playing for Glasgow Rangers and you were never certain that he would stay on the pitch for the whole match.

I know of Kevin Muscat very well from his time at Wolves, good player but like you said no guarentee he'd finish 90 minutes.Doog wrote:I saw Kevin Muscat a few times playing for Glasgow Rangers and you were never certain that he would stay on the pitch for the whole match.

despite my earlier post about my lack of interest... If you lot keep this up I'll be able to continue with my "not bothering to watch any matches" routine...
Seriously, I might watch the england matches should we get to any decent stage of the tourny... I'm somewhat interested with reading this thread... nice one Doog and all.
