france 98 beckham lifts his leg and taps that guy and gets a red! this game they were fightin left right and centre!! quiality entertainment though!

i really dont think england will get through unless they sort their shit out and play better weve got this far from luck so far!

Something I noticed as well was Maniche running right off the pitch and up to the fans after he scored (and he also took his time getting back on to the pitch).

Players are booked for this every other week in the Premiership and yet the card happy referee last night chose to igonre it.

I hope today's referee will be a lot more lenient as I can see things getting pretty messy when we take on the Italians.

Well, a landmark post marks the end of a landmark tournament for Australia.

Italy were technically the better side and defended brilliantly (as usual) and we just couldn't find a way past despite all the effort.

The deciding moment was incredibly hard to take but inevitable.

Say what you like about the guy "looking" for the penalty but it was a penalty by the book and that is how referees have played it.

Lucas Neill was sucked in and Australia were spat out.

Switzerland or Ukraine in the next round as well. Could have been some journey.

They think it's all over! It is now.

Just watched the Switzerland v Ukraine match, which was immensely disappointing but I wasn't really expecting much going by the way both teams have played so far in the tournament. A penalty shoot out finale was on the cards for quite some time.

I don't see how Italy should have anything to fear in the next round against Ukraine

Must be some sort of record here, but Switzerland have gone out of the World Cup without conceding a goal in open play.

Still, it's the last of the last sixteen games tomorrow with Brazil taking on Ghana and then Spain against next door neighbours France.

Hmmmmmmmmm..........

I imagine the Italians said the said before the game against the Aussies, talking of the Italy/Australia game it wasn't a penalty it was typical diving and cheating from the Italians.

I say the following as an Australian who is absolutely gutted about the way the game turned out.

I would describe the penalty incident more as gamesmanship. Lucas Neill committed himself to the challenge and the Italian (Grosso I think) duly took advantage.

Although there was no real contact, the referee had absolutely no option but to award the penalty (if you see what I mean)

Like I said in the earlier post, Neill got sucked in and we got spat out.

Who knows when we will next compete at this level in this sport again.

Australia will now play their World Cup qualifying games as part of the Asian groups (We were Oceania before) and this will mean that we will be able to qualify automatically instead of having to compete in a play off after winning the Oceania qualifying.

The Asian qualifying will present a more difficult challenge, and the majority of the current squad won't be around that long.

Guus Hiddink won't be around for four more days never mind four more years, but that's his decision.

He took us to Germany, no question about that. We now need someone who can build on what he has achieved and improve on it if at all possible.

The past two weeks (or so) has been a fantastic time for me and I think everyone can see how much it means to the fans in Australia who have been packing out large sections of the towns and cities to watch a game of soccer when they really ought to be in bed. The party started when we beat Uruguay in the play-off to qualify for the finals in Germany and I would like to think that the squad will take the time to go to Australia where I'm sure they will get a heroes welcome, before the majority head back to their clubs around Europe.

All credit to the Aussies, they fought hard. Italy shouldn't have been reduced to 10 men and prior to the dubious dismissal the Azzurri were on top.

I reckon that dismisal was fair.... what else do you have to do to get a red? Shoot someone?

He left the floor with both feet and his studs were showing..... if he had made better contact he'd have ended Besciano's career.....

It is quite ironic that it was an Aussie who was the subject of a Lucas Neil style challenge though.

what a wanker for acting up this way, gone right down in my opinion, I always felt the he has a bad attitude and a big head, but being as "talented" (?) as he is, I had hoped that he would be more of a sportsman. :?

... and with regards to Brazil making him look stupid, I think he'll do just fine on his own if that shit happens again... was that my first opinion post about football... I don't even been watching any, it was on because my boy was watching it. I enjoyed it  C'mon ENGLAND :!:

Anyone playing in the World Cup will have noticed that the referees are clamping down on anything that even remotely resembles foul play and the players have been only too willing to take advantage.

Would have liked to have seen Spain go through but they have a lot of young players coming through who will (or at least should) get the opportunity to play in World Cups to come.

Liked watching Ghana putting up a great effort against Brazil but when the chances come you have to take them and Brazil are certainly a team who can be attacked. However, at the flick of a switch they have the ability to turn defence into attack and goals often follow.

The quarter finals look like good match ups, but the teams will probably adopt a more negative let's not lose approach to the games which might make them less of a spectacle.

It's all about winning.
