Old Trip Report

Post by Valo »

For no particular reason I have decided to post my first ever attempted trip report, first posted on ignatzmice.com back in Feb 2005. I have literally just copied and pasted it so it's exactly the same as when I first wrote it out - like I said no rason for re-posting it, they are just here for anyone who wishes to read them.

Also, the link to the few pictures I took at the time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Part 1

Friday 31st December 2004

We had arrived, via EasyJet from London Gatwick, to the Centraal Station around 10 in the morning of December 31. I had gone with two friends (one an Amsterdam virgin) and our first call of duty was to stock up on smoking accessories at a Damrak souvenir shop – being a pipe smoker I chose a smart little pipe, which held surprisingly a lot of weed, to be my loyal companion for the next 4 days. It didn’t matter that we had no sleep the night before out of excitement and an early drive to the airport, as the surreal atmosphere of Amsterdam was absorbing into our bodies (all without visiting a coffeeshop!).

It wasn’t long before we made our way to Pink Floyd, as firstly I knew this to be a great value for weed shop and on my last visit in the summer had spent a day chatting with one of the budtenders in the shop – he wasn’t there that day but was to be working the next few; but the friendly helpful manner seemed apparent with all the staff in this shop. I tried a couple of grams of the Sensi-Star weed which within minutes made me having that feeling of ‘coming-home’, plus we got my favourite table just under the tv in the corner! Not long before we got into a mellow state, then the first firecracker of the day went of right by the window – just a taste of what was to come I guess.

I have no clue how long we spent in Pink Floyd, as time seems to stand still when in Amsterdam and replaced by the difference of light and dark :-) We wanted to stock up on weed for the night, not knowing where we will end up at midnight, so my friends asked me to take them to either Tweede Kamer or the Dampkring as we heard of their good menu selection. I say they asked me to take them as I feel I know Amsterdam like the back of my hand after all the reading up I did before this trip (thanks Ignatzmice) and I am pretty good at remembering places after a couple if visits in general.

I thought this was a great chance for a sneaky look down the Singel RLD before we unveiled the greatness of the Wallen RLD in the evening to my first-time friend. Walking down the Singel on the east side it wasn’t long before a glimmer of redness hit my eye – no matter how many times I see a red light kamer I still feel like a kid in a sweet shop.
First lady was an average looking Asian women followed by, in a lower down kamer, a very pretty older lady (I am 23 so anything above 30 would be in the older women category without sounding rude). I’m not sure if it was the luxuries of Pink Floyd, the brief glamour of the RLD or the bloody freezing cold – but both my friends had a pretty numb look on their face.

Despite the cold and likelihood of rain, we chose to look at the Dampkring first as of the many high reviews on various websites – we walked in the door and that was about as far as we could move, I almost expected Matt Damon or Brad Pitt to be there for an autograph sessions it was that crammed. Tweede Kamer it was! I was surprised at the size of the Tweede Kamer, not sure what I was expecting but I thought it would be bigger than it was. All the tables were occupied so I purchased some NYC Diesel and Hawaiian Haze and moved on – both nice smoke, especially the Hawaiian.

As we were in that general direction, The Noon was the next destination as we heard of the €25 for 5g of Blueberry deal (well worth it!!!) This was another shop I kind of expected to be larger inside, but it had a really cool plant and tree like theme inside – and they also served possibly the nicest (and largest) cup of coffee we found in Amsterdam. 3 or 4 coffees later and we thought it would be a good idea to find the hotel, as we didn’t have the best idea where it was, before it got too dark.

Now we knew the hotel was out the way and a 10-15min tram ride into to town, but we decided on walking to the hotel to get some fresh air in our lungs for probably the only time in 3 days :-) and also just because Amsterdam is an amazing city to walk around just to look at the buildings and surroundings. I thought the walk would take 40-50mins max. Nearly 2 bloody hours later we saw the sign for the Hotel Niuew Slotania (in Slotermerleen – not 100% on the spelling) **mental note** Check a full-scale map of Amsterdam before booking the hotel next time (what a twat!).

Fortunately the tram and bus service was impeccable (unlike here in England) and wasn’t long before we were propping the bar up in Stone’s Café in Warmoesstraat, sipping a mug of chilled Heineken. I wish I could go into more detail the facts and events this new years eve – but I think the combination of beer, weed and getting on for 40 hours with no sleep go hold of all 3 of us. I know we were somewhere down Damrak at midnight and I remember another couple of bars in Warmoesstraat – but the rest still hasn’t come back to me. Thinking back, we were lucky to direct ourselves onto the right night-bus, which must have been getting on for 3 or 4 in the morning.

The night, although hard to remember, was most enjoyable; but we just had the consequence of getting up in the morning so not to waste our few days in Amsterdam. A free continental breakfast and half a dozen orange juices later and we were sitting top floor in the Blues Brothers coffeeshop – I bought some weed with Watermelon in the name, although I didn’t need to with a handful of other bags still from the day before.

Today’s plan was coffeeshops during the day leading up to a night on the RLD. We ended up spending much of the day walking (what a time for my bad knee to bugger up for the first time in a year!!!!) Dr Ferrets prescription ~ a bag of White Russian from Mellow Yellow :-)
During the day we also picked up 3 bags of Mexican mushrooms (lucky to get them dried as the taste is rancid enough – let alone fresh ones) for when we get back to the hotel.

But on to the RLD………….

Part 2

During the morning and early afternoon we visited a couple of coffee shops that none of us had been to before, Picasso and the Easy Times were 2 I found had a good (very different from each other) atmosphere. I also thought the Easy Times sold the nicest hash, “Dutch Super Polm”, I had ever tried in Amsterdam on my three times there. You could almost see the hash fluff up in the warmth of your palm (very cool!!!)

Before it got dark, we also made a quick trip (for my first time) to Mellow Yellow as I knew this had some white russian weed I had wanted to get hold of. This seemed like a pretty chilled out coffee shop, almost reminds me of the typical classic American Diner – like you see in Happy Days; so it was a shame every table was occupied as this seemed a nice place to have a drink too. But it wasn’t a trip wasted as the white russian was not a disappointment – a nice sweet taste with the typical ‘you know you’ve had a toke’ stoned you get of a good indica weed.

As day slowly turned to night we headed to the Wallen direction, but from previous experiences found the district starts to liven up around 8-9 pm, so we opted to extend our ritual pre-red light smoke for a couple of hours as to introduce our Amsterdam-virgin friend to the RLD at the pinnacle of the action.
We walked up Warmoesstraat from the south direction, and this street is a picture in itself – a sea of colourful enthusiastic humanity framed by business offering everything from hallucinogenic trips to pink and white waffles to dvd’s of things I really never knew went on in this world. Walking up this road made me feel like Charlie went he entered the chocolate factory :-)

First up we came across Stones Café, more of a pub now they no longer sell weed (still allowing you to smoke your own). I liked this place to have a drink, although a little expensive - €4,50 for a Heineken I think it was, but it was a nice place to have a couple of pints before fully entering the RLD (an option given by a rear entrance to Stones Café taking you Oude Kerk way). After a couple of drinks and a blast of white russian it was on up the street and into Sheeba – a fairly nice place with bar at front and dealers counter out the back. I honestly can’t remember what I bought here, putting blame to the puff of russian not long ago – but I recall the bud seller was real friendly and also helped me get a more pleasant high effective weed so I could be ready for action later that night :-) Like I said, a nice place but we only had a couple of coffees, a smoke and head out again.

Heading up (in more ways than one) via distractions of many kinds in shop windows, we arrived at The Coin – none of us had been here before and if it wasn’t for the fact I had read about this place beforehand and had it shortlisted, I don’t think we would have gone in for the sheer fact of the look of the entrance (it wasn’t intimidating as such, just very slim and just didn’t look like a coffee shop - stupid i know but of of those things). I’m so glad we did go in as it is now pretty much top of my favourite coffee shops. The inside matched the thin entrance, as it was a long slim shop with a couple of cubicles for seating on your left followed by the bar and then a couple more tables. A real friendly bar tender served us some nice coffee and weed (I can recommend the Temple Ball I bought the next day too) and we sat at the back in front arcade machine. The only bad thing I could say of this shop is the low lighting, makes for an awesome atmosphere but a solely lit candle per table as the only light source pretty much in the whole shop makes loading a pipe or rolling a joint all that more difficult. We stayed here for longer than the other shops as it had a very mellow mood to the place and it was quieter than the rest of the city being new years day.

We thought we would make use of the back door in Stones Café and via another pint of Heineken open the door to the heart of the Red Light District………..
……turning right towards the Old Church we saw the first of the African women shaking their hips at us, not really what I’m looking for but who can help but smile at their determination especially when you hear some eager white guy trying too convince his mates to go in for a group discount on blowjobs ~ not 2 minutes into walking the RLD and the first surrealistic ‘once in a life-time’ situation arises (I love this place!)

Walking towards Sint Annendwarstraat and seeing the glowing patches of red from a distance brings back so many memories (both hazy and surreal) but it wasn’t long before we were one of the crowd having a dreamlike look at the beauties occupying the kamers opposite SexyLand. And I remember a pretty blonde girl either in the kamer between the Tromp and Dolle or Goldbergersteeg and Bethlemsteeg – she was a real stunner. A trip up to La Vie En Rose was a must too, there was another absolute stunning women up Bethlemsteeg (I think it was kamer ‘f’ looking on the Ignatzmice maps), but she was probably in her 30’s, long black hair and very sexy black lingerie and tights – as I said an absolute beauty of a women who gave me a nice smile the first time I walked past (and the seventh!!), so she was top of the list so far.
La Vie En Rose didn’t disappoint either, as what few kamers were open had very pretty girls standing pretty much in your face as you walk round – an short experience I would recommend anyone who visits the RLD.

We scanned the popular Dolle and Tromp streets with much amusement and visual pleasure, before heading up north on the OZV canal. A couple of nice windows later we crossed over the Korte Niezel bridge at the top of the canal and directed to walk down the OZA canal on the eastern side.
Now if my memory serves me correct (and in Amsterdam it has been known to have the odd blip!) the are 3 kamers as soon as the road goes south (in-between Stormsteeg and Boomsteeg) and the bit I do remember is there were two drop dead gorgeous girls in the central and right of the kamers. I stopped to look (naturally) and when turning back round realised my friends were not in sight…………..taking a couple of steps back to the bridge to take a look I saw one buddy (whom I had to been to Amsterdam with before) emerge from Stormsteeg, I think the extra pint in Stones Café had just taken him in the wrong direction but as for our other friend (who had never been to Amsterdam before) was no-where to be seen.
We waited a while on the bridge with no luck before taking a look down the canal a little way (but honestly – how are we supposed to look for a missing friend with all the real attractions going on??)
The only thing that concerned me was that our hotel was so far out of town that would he, in the smoke influenced state he is in, be able to remember 1) what it was called, 2) where it was, and 3) how to get there.
Now he being only about 5’3” and it being a Saturday and New Years Day, so the streets were a little busy, I knew we had slim chances of just finding him. That left us little choice but just to walk down every street in the RLD (what a shame) in any luck of finding him before making our way back to Dam Square for the last tram back around 11:30pm.
Needless to say we had no luck in finding our missing comrade, but I had loads of fun piecing up all my imaginary maps I had constructed from a lot of internet reading beforehand and actually getting the chance to walk them for real – this was my third trip to Amsterdam and the feeling of walking the RLD just gets more surreal each time. The only setback tonight was I never really had time to re-visit that girl I had fancied earlier on, or anyone come to that.

We arrived back at the hotel, almost hoping to see our friend already there waiting for us – not to be, so us lucky two began to talk of the days happening over a couple of nice smokes….not wanting to really indulge our bag of mushrooms each as we were probably a little more worried about our missing friend than we made out.
But it can’t have been half hour later when the key hole was rattling and a very familiar but casual face appeared the other side – asking what had happened we got a reply, almost as if it were no big deal that he walked to Centraal Station and got navigated to the next bus back to the hotel stop ~ fair enough ~ but I though being 21 years old and being possibly more stoned than ever before in your entire life, then getting lost in possibly the busiest part of town on the busiest day of the week and on new years day, was a bit of a story to talk about ~ obviously not :-)

But at least we had a bag of thai mushrooms each to end the night with – and what an end of the night that turned out to be. A little after an hour after taking the shrooms and wham bam thank you maam! I have never had such an uncontrollable fit of laughter over nothing, and every time I closed my eyes I was back in the red light district surrounded by even more lights (it was fantastic). We also had MTV Europe in the room which was a bonus and I remember falling in love with Gwen Stefani’s performance of What You Waiting for at the MTV Europe Awards – not really my sort of music but it’s funny what mushrooms can do to you, plus anyone as gorgeous as Gwen Stefani is just even more attractive (if possible) on a shroom trip – so it was almost getting daylight before we finally crashed out for the night.

Part 3

I had set my alarm for 2pm the next day as not to waste too much time in my favourite city. My two friends we one’s who at the best of times enjoyed their sleep so to speak, so it was unsurprising after a day of heavy smoking, evening of beers and walking and night of magic mushrooms that they would be wanting longer in bed than me. I wasn’t too complain thought as it was a chance for me to enjoy my own company in the daylight atmosphere of the Wallen and Singel RLD (the Pijp RLD was also a plan but my knee was being a shit – like I said first time in a year, typical! so the walking was a little more limited).
I caught the tram in to town, planning on meeting my mates around 6ish (I still can’t believe anyone could spend a whole day of their time in Amsterdam pretty much in the hotel room, no matter how twatted you feel). I made a route (following the Ignatzmice RLD walking guide) to get a rough feel of the place during the day and was pleasantly surprised. This was my first time in 3 trips that I had properly wandering around the Wallen during the day and I found it a very open atmosphere in appearance and general feel, it was nice to look around some girls not tired or too stoned.

The OZA canal was a nice sight during the day and has some nice roads leading off it too. I was surprised at the appearance of Gordijnensteeg, it was opposite was seemed to be a construction area (some more kamers would be pretty cool :-) ), but the road just didn’t seem all that inviting. I was also surprised at some of the beauties on Bloedstraat too, I was well aware of the fame of TS’s on the street which was always in the back of my mind but there was one real stunner a couple of kamers down on your right hand side (looking from the canal) with long brunette hair, whether she be a natural girl or TS I couldn’t help return the lovely smile she gave me. Now I have nothing against TS and I never say never about anything, but at this moment in my life I am fay more happy experiencing women first – but I still love the fact that Bloedstraat brings another amazing feature to the fact that Amsterdam really does cater for everybody!

Unfortunately I could not see the lady that caught my eye the night before in Bethlemsteeg but La Vie En Rose was host to another lady I added to my ‘wish list’ – a girl in the centre block (can’t remember what kamer) but she had black eyes makeup on and black lingerie almost like a goth chick (most sexy). I made a mental note before heading Singel direction, not before a quick Heineken and soft smoke in Stones Café for dutch courage.

Now I have to admit that this being my 3rd trip, it was my first time aware that there were actually 3 separate RLD’s as I had only seen a couple of kamers spread up Spuistraat – so imagine my face when I turn off Korte Korsjespoort into Oude Niuewestraat **wow** This road looks like a fairy tale, and I was equally surprised by the women too – a couple that didn’t really turn my head but a couple were really attractive! I said before, I am 23 but do like women in their 30’s as much as women younger than me so I was loving this area as much as most people enjoy the SexyLand peripherals.
I wondered the streets two or three times and after narrowing it down to two ladies in this district I opted for a blonde, dutch women probably around 30 years old who was when walking southways, would be about half way down Oude Niewestraat on your right hand side. She had given me a couple of smiles when I first made the route, and when I approached her window her smile broadened as she opened the door and ushered me inside. Before I said anything other than ‘hello’ she said she was glad I had come back on took my hand and led me upstairs – I felt this a little unusual as we had not negotiated a price or act or anything, although I did not feel intimidated or pressured in anyway.
Once up in her ‘bedroom’ she asked what I wanted and the standard was a €50 s&f – I had no complaints, I had even less complaints afterwards – now I don’t consider myself an expert on the red light girls at all but I like to think I know what is a good deal and not, plus I can easily say she was the best experience I have been with in Amsterdam so far…..and given me very good expectations of the Singel RLD in future.

Time was getting on so I made for The Coin coffee shop and waited for my friends to call up when they were ready to meet. We had more of a successful night on the RLD that night with a couple of beers in the Old Sailor thrown in too – I had another look down Bethlemsteeg for my favourite looking lady with no luck tonight but there were some other real hunnies out that night – I remember one in the ‘In den Lichtenkooi’ building on OZA, the right hand kamer had a Pamela Anderson look-a-like inside and don’t get me wrong I am very open minded and don’t care what others think about me but there something about the group of about 25 (no exaggeration!) constantly in awe at this girl that stopped me from going inside (I would have expected a movie star like exit when they get out of a limo into the clutches of desperate reporters). But at least the night remained 3 out of 3 friends and it was a most enjoyable night up to and including the night bus home.

The next morning was our last day so we checked out last minute at 11 in the morning and headed into town not having to catch the train to Schipol until around 7pm. All 3 of us were almost penniless (being students goes without saying I guess) so made the tough but correct choice when it came down to choosing another couple of grams of top grass or a proper meal for once – Tweede Kamer it was for some more Hawaiian Haze. We took it to Pink Floyd to see if the guy behind the weed counter was the same as our last trip in June ’04, it was – and hadn’t changed a bit, still as friendly and welcoming as ever keeping this shop as one of my favourites for sure!

One last stop was Route99, a really great coffee shop I had been to on previous visits that has 3 pool tables on the lower level and a relaxing seating and stool area on the upper level, it also plays some good music and has a nice mood with the lights and on this occasion has a very friendly attractive barmaid who also sold us a gram of white widow between us after we scraped the change together. This shop also sells a real nice English cup of tea I thought.

After some intense work getting rid of everything thing we bought right up until out side Schipol airport it was time to fly back down to reality still in Amsterdam mode even driving down the motorway for the hour long drive home at midnight.

Thanks for reading

Digging that one up must have been a nice trip down memory lane for you and New Year must be an awesome time to be in Amsterdam when everything remains open even on New Years Day (which never happens in the UK)

If it wasn't for the fact that it is bound to be absolutely fucking freezing and that my parents would disown me if I even thought about going on holiday during Christmas/New Year then I would be saying to hell with 4/20 and I would be working my ass off trying to make it for "the bells"

I've gotta know what the place (especially the open areas like Dam Square are like when the clock strikes midnight.)

More memories please...........

I wish I could but this is one of the most memroable days out of any trip I have ever done. Largely due to the extreme smoking the 3 of us set out to do from arriving in Pink Floyd early morning. All I can really remember from the night is a lot of trouble getting a beer in places like Stones and Excalibur as they were both crammed full of punters. The RLD lady-wise was very quiet, only a handful were working. Walking up Warmoesstraat was fun but freaky as there were several violent firecrackers set off and no-where to hide execpet the odd shop door!!

Damrak and Dam Square was just a sea of people and I don't even remember the countdown - just a lot of happy faces. Oh and in the morning, my shoes were filthy from all the slush that the firecracker wrappers make once they mix with a bit of rain!

Was an awesome trip though, only if I did it next time I would go on th 30th december as to help last a little longer as opposed to going out for NYE on arrival day.

best new year of my life was spent in niuew market after a recommendaion that it would be ' LIKE FUCKING BAGHDAD'

went out at about 8:30 after chillin in the hotel for a bit and took some pre rolled slpiffs to last us the night ( didnt plan on even trying to get seats anywhere) walked up through the red light district...that place never seems to get old! and up to niew market was about 9:30 by the time we got there

well...in the hotel receptionists words it was indeed like fucking baghdad!! more fireworks than i have seen in my life i was a little cautious and nervous at first but everyone seemed to get closer and i went with the crowd and when you see 5 year olds lighting little fire works right at the front its kinda embarresin to hang back!!

the fire crackers were insane! thousands in a strip like dynamite!! people dancing with boxes on their heads shooting out rockets!! when new year finally came i didnt think things could get much more hectic but it did!!! atmosphere was so great had a spliff in my mouth and some guy tapped me on the shoulder and him and his wife offered me some champagne, dutifuly i offered them something to smoke but they said no thanks so spoke to them for a bit, stayed to party for a while but then found my friends and we slowly started to head back to the hotel ( by about 1:30) took fucking ages cos of the amount of people and the fact that you had to duck every so ofen with people throwing fireworks out hte window!

funnies moment of the ENTIRE holiday was had on that night, we took a pen and paper on the holiday to record funny comments or anything that really got us going to reflect on the day after ( as im sure you can all appreciate memories go missing alot) but this guy who was wasted was riding down the road on his bike all over the place cars behind him beeping so he turns around and yells ' FUCK YOU!!!' the cars beep again * FUCK YOU TWICE!!* the cars now right up his arse he stop turns round and just screams * FUCK YOU THREEEEEEE TIMES!!* had me in absolute stitches!

got back to hotel had some bongs and passed out eventualy, ready for new years day ( shrooms day) but i wont go into that now!

that was my best new year ever

Sounds absolutely fantastic and I do wish that I stayed in a big city where I could experience something like the same sort of atmosphere.

Wouldn't be anything like Amsterdam.

Hopefully one day I will get the chance there.

Thanks guys

Thanks for posting! I didn't really have time, should have been to bed hours ago (but then again; I can't really consentrate on work these days anyway...), so I decided on ending the evening by reading your report - again; excellent writing! I just ease into the writing and for someone with an overly active imagination like mine, I feel like I'm walking along, just two steps behind and observing glimts of the city through your eyes :)

Only five more days now, and I'll be making some new Amsterdam memories of my own :D. Shame our paths won't cross this trip, would've been nice to hear your stories live sometime :)

Take care! 8)

Looking forward to hearing what you get up to in Amsterdam, I know you will have a good time. I'm also sure that our paths and canals with cross during one of our trips, sounds like we will be Amsterdamming for a while yet!!!

Hope you have fun next week

Doog - NYE is like 4/20, QD and Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam...you will likely have a favourite holiday amongst them - but I think at some point, all of them will have to be experience one way or other (although I only have NYE down on my name so far  )

Hmm. Highly unlikely that I'll be in Amsterdam for New Years Eve in the foreseeable future.

I am down for 4/20 next year but staying till Queensday and beyond would be too much.

2007 for 4/20
2008 for Queensday if the coffeeshops haven't been closed down by then

First point, Pencil me in on the 2008 Queensday trip Doog

Second point  I have not read This trip report yet

The reason... I KNOW it's going to be awsome and I have not yet found a suitable hour or so (yes, ok, i'm a slow reader) to sit down and read it, probably twice... I will and once read, my review will be posted... promise
