Thanks for the kind words folks. Crash and I r back home now which might explain why I'm struggling so much with TENSES, since I can barely distinguish between the days I spent in AMS and the present. Two hours after landing, we are at a BAR chowing down on some gyros sammies. Washing that down with some Two Hearted ales from Bell's brewery and wondering how gr8 it would be if we could follow that with a SPLIFF.

Sigh. Gotta work on getting those post-CC tix.

I guess a word about the studio apartment is in order, which we rented through CityMundo. It's owned by a pensioner who resides onsite and is well situated on the western edge of the Jordan on Nieuwe Leliestraat facing a school. We have easy access to the 10, 13, 14, and 17 trams and it's a straight shot (kinda) to the Grey Area. Haven't heard the Westerkerk carillon once since I've been here which is a plus when ur nursing a hangover. Crash is sleeping in a lofted sleeping area by the front window while I'm installed in a sofabed below. We have a rear balcony area and a spacious bathroom, one quadrant of which is comprised by an unenclosed shower area. Most of a kitchen is in place, lacking an oven and sporting a mini-fridge. Unfortunately, there's not a serviceable kitchen knife with any hint of an decent edge around. These drawbacks have effectively put the kibosh on Crash's plan to experiment with space brownies. Not much of a view of anything either. Breaking out costs, it comes to €65 per person per night. It has all the necessary elements for a great vacation but I'd have to say it's a bit of a dump. Still, one of its positives may be the nearby proximity of coffeeshops such as the Paradox and Eerste Hulp (1e Hulp).

After nibbling a few pastries from a nearby chain bakery, we sauntered over to 1e Hulp, which translated in English, means 1st Aid. It's supposed to open at nine and I was shocked to see that it actually was. Not only were they already selling cannabis, but two or three groups had already gotten there b4 us and were spliffing up. The coffeeshop itself is a split level design with three spacious sitting areas on the upper level, the bar on the main floor, and another niche on the bottom level along with a pool table, all done with a restrained Moroccan influence.

We bought a gram of Amnesia and a gram of Intensive care from the especially slinky milf I was chuffed to see at that time in the morning. She looked a bit sleepy still and took to sitting dreamily outside when idle. The Amnesia strongly resembled the €5 chunk I'd gotten from Paradox the day b4. There seems to be a tidal wave of Amnesia and Big Buddha Cheese engulfing Amsterdam at the moment and indeed, ms. milf offered me an excellent sample to sniff of the latter. I'd been quite happy with the BBC from Anyday the prior evening, and so opted for a straight forward sativa wake-and-bake. About the Intensive Care, I asked for its origins and was told that it was a hydro white widow cross. It turned out to be a bit lightweight in strength, so it's prolly an alright daytime smoke.

Image
That's the slinky milf in the window! Also, that sign ought to be changed -- they do NOT have wifi.

Ms. milf explained to me that one of the two owners of 1e Hulp lost a bet with the other, hence the FCB banner in the entryway.

Those pasty colored appendages aren't mine!

Amnesiafied, we hopped the 24 tram headed for de Graal in de Pijp. This turned out to be another split-level cs that is deceptively larger than it appears from the outside. Upstairs are the comfy couches and coffeetables so well documented in recent trip reports. The day was getting warmer so they left the door open leading to the sunroof. August sunshine was spilling into the coffeeshop living room. It was very quiet save for the gentle murmur of happy stoners.

Took advantage of the €5 deals for a taste of the BioShiva since they were out of the Goldrup at the time. Crash quite liked this and says its herbal and minty. I definitely tasted a distinctly vegetative note.

The lady budtender was quite obliging when I asked for menu pix. She even provided samples. Pity my crap photography skills couldn't capitalize on her generosity.

We need 2 come back 4 more but for now, out into the grey sunshine -- it's been a stretch of mostly cloudy days in Amsterdam, threatening rain on occasion, but never actually impeding our progress. First stop at the bustling market was at a stall I initially mistook for a takoyaki stand -- it turned out to be a poffertje vendor instead. 10 stuk for €2 scarfed in the shade. Followed by a pair of €1 loempia (skinny eggrolls) dressed with a choice of sweet-and-sour sauce or chili sambal. Next stop was the stroopwafel stall where we split a freshly-pressed schenk stroop-laden pair of wafers. Along the way we picked up 100g - 300g of overripe raspberries and sweet dutch cherries. Now we were already stuffed with cheap street food, and our messenger bags were bulging with uneaten fruit, but we dropped in anyway on the fishmonger up the street from Katsu and picked up 250g of kibbeling (fried hunks of north atlantic cod) for €4. Unfortunately Katsu turned us out when the seafood was produced (boo) and we gobbled steaming chunks of kibbeling slathered in garlic sauce just outside the doorstep. There was no mistaking the freshness of the cod. Back inside for a €10 buy of 0.7g of Nepal Annapourna, two ice coffees and some bong hits of Bio Shiva. Crash pronounced the iced coffee to be the best he's ever had. The nepali was dark, sticky, and tasted fine, but to my uneducated taste buds, was otherwise unremarkable. Crash detected a lingering note of allspice. We finished off the raspberries and half of the cherries inside before packing up for Club Media.

It's been many years since I last visited and Club Media has gone upscale though you would never know it if you remained beyond its inner doors. The weed counter is located in the foyer and the seating area just beyond is obscured by tinted glass. Inside, the decor would not be out of place in an italian coffee bar were Starbucks to plant its flag on Milanese soil. I wuz on a mission to obtain a sample of the Hindu Kush ice-o-lator along with some Hindu Kush. In an earlier thread, DC let slip that Club Media was the source of the weed fairy's ice. I just had to get some. bleak related later that the clone mother possessed by Club Media provided much of the Kush parentage for the crosses originating in Amsterdam and gapie mentioned that the grower traded weed with the shop in return for hefty percentage of ice, a not uncommon practice. The Hindu Kush cannabis turned out to be an aromatic lung buster with an expansive spicy flavor and a pronounced indica stone. Crash felt it tasted piney with a hint of rosemary. It earned a healthy respect from me for its ability to launch me into paroxyms of coughing. OTOH, the ice was surprisingly sweet in contrast and on par with Crystal Clear in terms of strength. I ended up googly-eyed on several occasions because of it.

Sorry for da crap pic -- hadda use my phone camera!

Next on our shopping list was daytime smoke, and a few days prior to our trip, I had spotted a few accolades on the board for the S5 Haze from coffeeshop Ocean, an independent in the de Pijp neighborhood that has been winning Highlife cups of late. In terms of layout, Ocean takes a leaf from Club Media's book, opting for the weed counter to be located in a large foyer in the front of the store. To sit, you must pass through its doors to a well-appointed lounge area. Coffeeshop Ocean was offering S5 Haze at the bargain basement price of 2.5g for €20, which breaks out to €8 per gram. The S5 is a brilliant daytime smoke, distinctly lemony and quite strong, with a focused, euphoric high.

Upon leaving the shop, I realized that I needed directions to our next destination, the distillery, the House of Bols. Standing in the middle of the street, I attempted to boot up my laptop wherein I had entered detailed route maps prior to the trip. After a few minutes, I sensed an enormous presence hulking over me which turned out to 250 pounds of reddish blond hair and muscles. It was the owner of the coffeeshop who only needed an under-sized merchant marine cap to imitate some Breughel caricature. He invited me back into the shop to use the free wi-fi and served up a cold drink on the house. I imagine he was overcome with curiosity as to what I was doing in the middle of the street and perhaps a bit miffed that I chose to buy 'n fly instead of lingering in his nice clean shop which I found amusing.

Determining that we would never make the House of Bols in time, we leisurely made our way to Papillon which I had wanted to visit from reading Twichaldinho's travelogue. Papillon turned out to be the snazziest establishment I visited on this trip, resembling a chic cocktail lounge more so than a coffeeshop, complete with a subdued jazzy neon sign signalling its presence on the sleepy plaza. One third of the space was taken over by the weed counter while the rest was devoted to low comfortable couches. The interior was uniformly espresso colored throughout and highlighted with soft accent lighting. Two or three tables comprised a credible terras beyond an open window. It was all very stylish and civilized, the kind of place you wouldn't feel bad bringing a date for a few lattes over a spliff. Crash and I whiled away a good chunk of sunshine lounging about, alternating between long tokes of Hindu Kush ice-o-lator and delicious bong hits of Blue Cheese, of which we picked up a half gram sample for €5. I was very happy with the Blue Cheese which I felt edged out the Green Place version in terms of flavor. It was better cured and apparently well flushed as well. Taking note of the 15% discount they give for 5g buys, I resolved to return someday.

For dinner, we reluctantly left Papillon for restaurant Hap-Hmm by the Overtoom. Hap-Hmm falls into that vanishing category of eateries that are trying to serve well-cooked meals at reasonable prices -- casual dining gems that are few and hard to find. The restaurant itself is housed in a row building so that the dining room is quite long and narrow, nicely decorated with bric-a-brac, and underserved by insufficient waitstaff. Like many Amsterdam establishments, they refuse reservations for parties less than eight in number, so I was nervous that we would be facing a long queue since we arrived at the beginning of the dinner rush. Fortune favored us however, and we lucked into a table immediately while a line began to form after us. Instead of ordering traditional dutch favorites such as the giant gehaktbal (meatball) sandwich and the meat and vegetable mash known as stampot, we opted for a pair of zigeunerschnitzels dressed in stroganoff sauce. I had no idea what a zigeuner was or exactly what was stroganoff sauce, but Crash said it was all good and so I played along. They turned out to be exactly like wienerschnitzels, breaded and fried, although slightly overdone. The vegetable sides, selected by the waitress, were magnificent, being perfectly seasoned and steamed, while the oven roasted potatoes were golden and crisp. Obviously, they put a lot of stock into serving excellent sides, which is a plus when you change your menu daily. I ordered a Heineken beer I'd never encountered b4 -- the Oudbruin -- a bit malty for my taste but it turned out to be a wonderful pairing with the carrots. For dessert, I was stunned by the homemade strawberry panna cotta that was light as milk foam, sweet, and creamy. I would go back for this alone. Crash ordered the tiramisu which he complained had a touch too much marsala. We were presented with a bill at the end for under €40 which included a shared shrimp appetizer, 2 zigeunerschnitzels, sides of carrots and green beans, 4 beers, and 2 desserts. Not bad*.

Leaving the restaurant for the Leidseplein, we ran into a cat sunning itself on a car roof, completely at-ease and unperturbed by the notion that at any moment, it could be turned into a furry pancake by an over-zealous and inobservant driver.

Image

We made our way to Rokerij I where I hoped to obtain some Laughing Buddha and to kill a few hours prior to attending Noodlanding, the weekly rave held at Paradiso. By this time, both Crash and I were beginning to wilt under the combined aftereffects of travel, too much cannabis, and middle age. We ran into a pack of impressionable young men from Canada and down under who were loudly congratulating themselves over the Chocolope they had scored. It occurred to me to apprize them of their proper place in the cosmos, so we shared some bonghits of Hindu Kush ice with them. They were pretty quiet after that.

Image

By this time, the two of us were ready to pitch forward into our koffie verkeerds, so we agreed to head home for a nap () and return to the Leidseplein later. I think at heart, we both knew we were done for the evening. On the way home, we stopped by Mercan patisserie on Rozengracht for a couple of lahmacun, smoked up the Intensive Care, and dozed off. End day two.

* Yes to answer ur unvoiced question, I truly am a pathetic dork to pull out a camera in the middle of a resto to take pix of my food.

Edited multiple times to include pix, and to revise spelling and grammar.
