Anne Frank tree falls in storm today

Post by Marco »

The big winds today were too much for the tree that sat outside the house that Anne Frank and her family hid in during WWII.

Very sad to lose a living connection to that era. Between trees, veterans and survivors, they are going at an alarming rate.

Frank's Diary of a Young Girl, has blown down. A spokesperson for the Anne Frank House said "there was a fierce gust of wind, we heard a noise and when we went to look it was lying on the ground."

The tree is mentioned three times in her diary. On 23 February 1944 she wrote: "… from my favourite spot on the floor I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine… while this lasts I cannot be unhappy."

The horse chestnut is thought to be between 150 and 170 years old and has suffered both a fungus and a moth infestation. In November 2007 the city council ordered it cut down because of the risk it could fall, but a court injunction stopped the felling. In 2008 a structure was erected around it to support the crown.

Slightly ot, but why was the garden\tree never part of the tour when you go round the house?.

As having read the book in school as a kid it was something I wanted to go see when I visited the house a few years back. But from what I could tell there was never any access to the garden for the public and looking through a gap in 1 of the windows all we could see was a very over grown garden that was left to ruin anyways.

Strange, that new article says:
After it became infected with a fungus and started dying, the 150-year-old tree was cut down and removed from the garden of the house where Anne hid from the German occupiers. '
I thought it was blown down in a storm? Or so the first article says! Weird..
