West(erpark) Side Story: Loft, Chapiteau, Barentsz ...

Hello again, fellow ACDers. On this trip I made an effort to visit a few lesser known coffeeshops in De Baarses and Westerpark. I also passed through Grey Area, Homegrown Fantaseeds and Anyday; the draw of the Centrum proved too much to ignore entirely. I'll be posting my reports in installments, so be sure to check back periodically :)

strain: Mean Martian Green
cs: Grey Area
price: €11.50
odor: the lemony-pine smell we’re all familiar with
I asked the ‘tender for a clear, energetic high. He showed me the C13 Haze and the Mean Martian Green. I got the MMG.
As this stuff is wearing off, I’m having a hard time putting my finger on its strong points. At its peak, it had an interesting effect on my perception of sound. Soon after lighting up I walked past a pair of construction workers playing Springsteen from their van. The music came to me in modulated pulses. I made it back to my hotel room soon after, not before becoming a wee bit disoriented.
So I got home, ate (food never tasted better), took a few budshots and ended up where I am now, writing this report. What can I say? MMG started out swell, giving the senses a little tweak. After that, well, it’s just a buzz.
I found MMG to be hard on the lungs.

strain: Paars (grown outdoors; paars translates to ‘violets,’ I believe)
cs: Loft
price: €4.50
odor: pipe tobacco, leaning towards … chili powder?
I was rooting for this strain because I liked the shop’s ambiance. Loft is welcoming and sunny inside, like a kitchen with good light.
Paars is stealthy. Right when I started thinking, ‘This isn’t doing anything for me,’ a speedy rush came on. The raciness soon passed, and I felt the urge to do something. I kept walking around the margins of Zaandam.
Paars wound down to a clear, mild high. It lends itself to sightseeing and reading.
The buds themselves are strange. They appear to be hashy little grapes attached to a woody stem. The smell is remarkable. The first inhale tasted like cocoa.

strain: Godbud
cs: Chapiteau
price: €9
odor: Vienna sausages and the powdered cheesiness of Cheese Puffs, on top of the typical piney-lemony number
Chapiteau’s Godbud was dry at first touch but very sticky once I tore into it. The smoke couldn’t have been smoother. I’m no expert, but I’d say this stuff was well cured.
Godbud finds its roots in British Columbia, I believe, so I was curious about the strain. Somehow I had formed the impression that it packs a wallop. I was out walking around when I first gave it a try, so I was bracing myself for some turbulence. I needn’t have worried.
Godbud is partially reminiscient of 420’s NYCD. It’s got Diesel’s restrained, clear and confident high – but it lacks that cool melancoly I’ve come to expect from a Diesel. Godbud’s high can’t be called euphoric, but negative thoughts have definitely been taken off on the agenda. I took a long walk north of the city on this stuff.
Yes.

Gapie: All three pics were taken along the same bike path in Zaandam. I did quite a bit of smoking there :)

ftcarer: I am always looking for places to light up discreetly. Next time I visit Loft (and I wish that day could come sooner), I shall head over to the park for a quicky :)

strain: Purple Power (outdoors)
cs: Homegrown Fantaseeds
price: €5/gr
odor: mild pipe tobacco
Perhaps you have once dated someone who was rather plain looking. By no means was she (or he) heinous, but this person was lacking in beauty. And perhaps you decided, several coffees and several dinners later, that she was dull as well. Yet somehow circumstances unfolded as they sometimes do, and one night you ended up going over to her apartment. And it was then a grand realization came home, moments after getting into bed with her for the first time: You were in the arms of a sexual juggernaut. Who knew?
Of course, this scenario has never actually happened to Yours Truly. It was the analogy that came to mind once the Purple Power took hold, though, sometime after picking a bunch of those raisin-budlets off of the stem and stuffing them into the bowl. I was thinking, 'Why did I buy more of this twiggy outdoor shit?' ... until I lit up. That's when I started looking for a big analogy to relate the experience.
Purple Power was no creeper. It came on fast, and it came on like an indica. I was aware of a warm humming in the back of my neck and then in my arms. I wasn’t entirely stupefied, but I knew the weed was snugging up a clamp on my head.
And then I felt like smiling. I was expecting so much less, but all of a sudden it was: Here we go! A few minutes after the initial stone, a heady ‘whoo-hoo’ had jumped through the door, and it was looking to cause some mischief. I was inside of my head, yet I still wanted to explore town. PP wants you to have fun. It wants to party.
I was high, I was stoned. Purple Power had this terrific balance, without a couchy letdown. Perhaps the best weed of the trip – for €5 a gram. Who knew?

strain: Cheese
cs: Homegrown Fantaseeds
€: 12.50/gr
odor: composting hay, manure perhaps.
Like every other strain so far, I smoked the Cheese on the Westerwindpad bike path in Zaandam. (My hotel room had windows which barely opened at the top. Grrr.) Going with my imagination, I'd say the first inhalation tasted of the powdery fragrance of scented Kleenex.
As I walked home to the hotel, I noticed that mundane sights – a seagull, water pouring into a sewer grate and the banners for Regio College stood out – seemed more vivid. In my notes I called the buzz 'calming, a rich pot experience.'
The rich pot experience continued once I got back to my room. The effect was very even. I stopped bracing myself for a racy spike. Cheese is comfort food for the head: I had dinner and enjoyed the failing daylight. I found it mellow without being sleepy .. and I can't recall having used the word mellow to describe a high before.
Cheese put me into a coffee commercial from the 1980s. You know, the soothing warmth, reflecting on special times with old friends, the inner peace … all that stuff. I fired up Bach's English Suite on the mp3 player, and the Nescafe moment was complete. The moment was not mind-blowing, mind you, but it was indeed nice.
