Going to Amsterdam with less than 6 months left on passport?

Post by Dave J »

Well, with a m8 going next month it's dawned on me that there is very little time left on my passport and would love 1 last trip on it before it runs out (simply cos cant justify a new passport cost to the gf IF I got permision (not that I need it lol) to go late next year).

My m8 says he might be able to go again either feb or march next year. Only my passport expires july next year. Is there any known problems using a pasport to go to amsterdam with less than 6 months left on it?.

I'd take Kingdocs advice , I thought you had to have atleast 6 months remaining on your passport on the day you return.
Sending out the good vibes to those that need them right now :-)

Thanks for the replies guys, but I'm having problems trying to find some kind of official clarification on the issue.

I was wandering if the at least 6 month remaining by return date was only for non EU countries?. Meaning as both GB & Holland are EU countries then I should be fine with less than 6 months?.

Going to have to look into the issue more as this works both ways in that I dont want to be spending £70 plus on a passport if my current 1 will be accepted for just 1 trip I'll be making in the next 2 years.

Surely if the airline says yes no problem I aught to be ok?

Am I right in saying your passport runs out in July 2011 and you're looking at going in feb or march 11? if so you'll be fine.

Yep Boner, but I know there is some form of regulations for some countries about travel if there is less than 6 months left on a passport. Just cant find the info properly on either the easyjet site or google.

Funny enough there seems to be an EU id card which some airlines accept for travel and they are a fraction of the cost of a new passport so might be an option for others on here if flying within eu countries only and no valid passport?.

Sorry, just read elsewere the 6 month rule deffo does not apply to EU countries or pretty much all of europe in fact.

I had a look about and found this page

http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_w ... er=SKYWEB1

and that seems to say you should be ok, but I don't know. I'd ahte to get to the airport all giddy with anticipation and then get told I couldn't fly - I've seen too many episodes of Airline to risk it. No what you mean about the price though £70's steep and for that price shouldn't a passport be valid till the date printed on it wherever you decide to go? :x

Why do you UK folks need a passport at all? I am able to travel around Europe with my French ID card no problem. Or do you not have ID cards in the UK?

get a european I.D card for 30£ you should be able to get the form from a local post office as long as your not planning a trip outside europe any time soon then this is the cheapest/fastest way to make sure you have no problems getting threw the airports.

Has anyone tried these though? In theory if you've got a UK driving license that should be acceptable proof of ID, looking at the directgov site you've got to have a passport - thought we had free travel around the EU - more you look it, more it comes across as the british govt taking the piss, yet again

For whatever reason the airlines near enough always ask for a passport to fly out of the UK, my wife flew up to Scotland on business last year just showing her drivers license.
