Actual Cheese

Post by tron »

Any recommendations on getting good Dutch cheese in Amsterdam. I didn't notice any during previous trips, although I wasn't looking. I'm guessing there's gouda everywhere.

I probably won't get a chance to get far outside of Amsterdam during my stay.

There's a good cheese shop on Singel, it's near rokerij II, called Kaasland de Roomport.
Or you can go to the deli counter in Albert Heijn

I'll second that! Kaasland one of the best cheese shops I've visited in dam. Great selection to choose from and prices are affordable. Also the location is great, haarlemmerstraat 2, so it's propably on your way home from barney's, dampkring and other fine establishments on haarlemmerstraat...

Albert Cuypmarkt!
Get cheese at the market stalls or go to katsu and get some BBC or better SoGouda!

Both the market and katsu are good quality and not toury!

I agree, Albert Cuypmarkt. You can get one of the waxed cheese wheels or get just a few slices. A friend of mine picked up a 50 gram chunk of cheese to eat on the way to Katsu.

Cool are there any restrictions bringing food back to the US? I'm also hoping to bring back a bottle of Jenever.

Yes there are restrictions on bringing back food and alcohol. Alcohol I think the restrictions are on quantity, a bottle should be no problem. As for food that is where it gets tricky sometimes. My friend and I each bought a small wheel of cheese, his got seized by US Customs. My cheese was no problem. I think he may have had unpasteurized cheese or goat cheese. When in doubt just ask when you are looking to buy, most of the vendors know what you can and can not travel with.

I Always get Goat cheese and/or Sheep Cheese ....... One comes in a small white wheel the other comes in a small black wheel .... I cant remember what one was what. I do know that at times in the year they might not have it. (Its a seasonal thing). Don't get those 3-5 packs made for the tourists ..... that's bad cheese.

It depends in Holland basically whether you want Jonge (young), or oude (old) cheese. I love the ouwe kaas and recommend 'Old Amsterdam', you can get it in Albert Heijn. It's the most expensive but well worth it...mouth watering it is ;-)
