roker, do you know alot about dutch food?
That would be a 'frikandelletje oorlog'...you can have that sauce combo with chips too, it's called 'patatje oorlog', or literally 'war chips', as you correctly said. Maybe they fed the soldiers on this during the war? who knows, but it's what I always have...lekkere patatje oorlog alstublieft...Dava wrote:when i was on business trip we was in a town called 'gemert' and they had a delivery van that brought food round, they called it 'french fry war' it had fries,diced onions,sate sauce,mayonnaise, and a frikadel i beleive (hotdog type thing)
just wanted to know if this has a name or anything as was very yummy!!! i love the dutch version of 'sate' sauce!
roker wrote:If you ask for 'een frikandel (letje*) oorlog' you will get a frikandel with mayo, sate sauce, and chopped onions. Same goes for the chips...ask for a 'patat (je*) oorlog' and you'll get chips with the same sauce combo. Try a berenklauw (Bears claw), with oorlog sauce...mmmmm
* optional but gives it a nice friendly informal tone. The Dutch love to add 'tje' or 'etje', or just 'je' to the end of words, eg 'bladzuiger', or 'bladzuigertje'...just gives it that bit more of a friendly tone imo...
roker wrote:to start with, a gh is the throaty sound of a Dutch 'G', not to be confused with the much harsher 'ch' sound. The G is much softer especially in Belgium and Southern Holland, with the exception of Rotterdam, but they're all pickled anyway.
patatje =patat-ya (as in 'atat' from Star Wars, ya as in 'have ya got')
oorlog= or-logh (Like Loch Lomond pronounced correctly)
frikandel= frik-an-dell
frikandelletje=frik-an-dell-a-tya (As in 'haven'tya')
Berenklauw=beer-a-klou (As in 'cloud')
A berenklauw is basically a gehaktballetje (Large meat ball), sliced like you would a tomato but thicker, it has onion in between the slices and is held together by a wooden skewer. Usually you'd ask for sate sauce and they lash it over it...great snack/meal depending on how big your stomach is...available at most 'snackbars'.
Practice saying it 5 times and you'll get it...

i seriously can't eat onions, they make me ill.... i will still try the hering solo....No bread, i love fish cooked or raw....roker wrote:Can't have Hollandse Nieuwe without onions...They're nice in a bread roll too for the squeamish ones who can't eat a raw fish with their head tilted back rather like a Herring Gull...excitableone wrote:Now im not sure if this item is considered a munchie, but im actually gonna try the herring this trip...Minus the onions, i hate onions![]()
i figure sushi is a munchie list item for me, why not raw hering?
