Classic TV Shows - Your Faves

Post by Doog »

Just read that Top Of The Pops is to be taken off the air after 42 years of broadcasting on the BBC. Man, I grew up with that show along with many others that you don't see on (UK) television nowadays.

What were your favourite TV shows growing up?

My ideal night in would be

Star Trek (Original Series)
Incredible Hulk (Live-Action TV)
Twilight Zone (Black and White)
The Man from U.N.C.L.E
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Only Fools And Horses

Obviously these shows were broadcast as re-runs during my younger years, but when I look at the TV shows that I watch today, none of them come close to the shows listed above as ones that I would watch week in week out.

24 is a great modern show.

Granted, in my opinion it's the only one.

But I never objected to watching the andy griffith show! That's about as old as I'll get though.

Star Trek for ever and ever, we are more fans of The Next Generation and onwards, but TOS is also amazing...

But what exactly is a classic tv-show? How old does it need to be?

Monty Python was absolutely brilliant!

Ok, just re-read the thread, the question was not specifically classic shows, but what shows we watched growing up…

Top Ranking:

Star Trek – TNG, DS9 and Voyager (“Star Trek” as a series from the start of TNG and onwards would be the precise answer)
Friends
A few Danish shows in the early years
Simpson’s

Although spending a lot of time with the TV I was much more into movies than series or shows “back in the day”, nowadays I tend to watch much more shows, series and sports compared to movies, the quality of what’s coming out just can’t compete on average…

And just to expand a bit, these are the shows I/We cannot miss currently:

UFC/Pride FC and The Ultimate Fighter
Top Gear
Fifth Gear
Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis
Family Guy and American Dad
Any NFL game shown on Danish tv (including all play off games and the Super Bowl)

Following brightcarver's post, I do also remember the Irwin Allen shows of the sixties (they were shown on Channel 4 in the UK usually on a Sunday afternoon). Wasn't really into those ones as much (HATED Lost In Space and wasn't keen on Land Of The Giants either) but Time Tunnel was a good one.

Also, THE INVADERS (David Vincent et al)

Man, the TV shows of years gone by are SO MUCH better than today.

I actually do a lot of searching for these kind of shows on the net (fan sites, episode guides etc)

ITV4 in the UK recently re-ran all sorts of British shows from the 60's
(Randall and Hopkirk, The Saint, Return Of The Saint, Man In A Suitcase, The Persuaders, The Champions and more)

Great stuff
